“So I’m not…” Bilbo began and was surprised to hear his voice shake. He swallowed hard and folded his hands together tightly, pressing his fingertips against his knuckles to help him focus. “I’m not… broken or bad?”
“Of course not!” came from the others, the ‘Ri brothers and the two princes being the loudest.
“You’re not broken or bad,” Thorin said firmly, but kindly. “You are Bilbo Baggins of Hobbiton and you are the fourteenth member of this company. You are you.”

Summary
The pain started when Newton was eleven years old. There was no trigger or inciting incident that he could have blamed for it, nothing to point at and identify as the source. There had been no accident, no injury, nothing. He simply woke up one day with his left leg hurting. In retrospect, the pain was not the first symptom. It had merely marked the point of no return, the moment when Newton could no longer entirely ignore the problem.
Newton suffers from a chronic pain condition and uses a cane, just like Hermann.

What was happening to him? He had never felt this way before, like the world around him was too much to withstand, like there was too much sensory input for him to process, too much information raining down on him from everywhere, his ears, his eyes, his skin—
A small voice of reason reminded Hermann that while he had never felt like this before, he had experienced something similar when he drifted with Newton and was plunged into Newton’s memories.
Panic attack.
Sensory overload.

Summary
When Newt next opens his eyes, it’s to the searing heat of a hand against his shoulder.
He flinches away, of course—he doesn’t know what to do with physical touch after so long without it.
And he certainly doesn’t know what the fuck to do with a touch that is gentle.
When was the last time someone touched him tenderly? When was the last time he danced with anyone save his ghosts?
Newt is feverish and aching and filled with so much grief that he doesn’t know if he’ll ever be able to carry his own ghosts any further than this fucking toilet seat, with the orange acid and the gleaming porcelain and the cheap tiles beneath his knees.
And when Newt looks up, he thinks that it’s one of the dreams that the precursors once infected his brain with. The dreams of Hermann Gottlieb showing up by his side, stepping foot inside of that penthouse apartment in Shanghai, and sweeping him off of his feet and taking him away from that wretched fucking place.
(After being released from prison, Newt finds himself under probation as Hermann's lab assistant. When he gets sick, he thinks no one will care- but he will find himself sorely mistaken.)

“You shall fight them,” Hermann orders, and his voice brokers no argument.
Hermann’s fingers slip beneath the chain around Newt’s collar. Hermann shall dig his nails in. He shall not let the precursors have Newt. They will not stake their claim on someone who has only ever been Hermann’s.
And Hermann yanks.
(The mentions of Alice over the years blistered, Hermann wanting to respond, wanting to bite back, but he knew that he had to respect Newt’s decisions, no matter how much he wanted to grab Newt and press him up against a wall and bite his mouth and demand that Newt tell him in what fucking world Newt thought that Hermann would ever let him get away from him—
He should have. He should have done that. He should have ripped open those fucking suits and peeled Newt open and marked up every inch of his skin, if it meant that Newt exactly where he belonged—free and adored and his, not some fucking aliens’.)
The collar chain breaks, the links hitting the ground with clinks and clatters, as the drift shudders. As an inhuman, strangled sound echoes from Newt’s throat.
(When Newt tells Hermann that he is not strong enough to fight the precursors, Hermann refuses to take that.)

Summary
Hermann wets his bottom lip with the tip of his tongue, taking this in for the briefest of moments, before his notoriously whip-sharp (and for good reason) mind collects this data, sorts it, and comes to the conclusion of an ingenious plan.
Newton is not yet lost. Hermann is still his partner. And not only have the Precursors drastically counted their chickens before they’ve hatched, they made one, fatal, supremely arrogant flaw: they’ve revealed that to Hermann.
Or, the Precursors bank on Hermann's emotional repression just a little too hard, and face the (extremely well-researched and therapeutic) consequences.
