The woman hands him a 6 month old child and explains that this is what they wanted. The will stipulated that he would be their guardian in such a circumstance.
He stares at her tiny face. She stares back.
He shuts the door and wonders how anyone could think this was the right choice.

Evan, Evan Buckley, his brain supplied. 118, Howie’s friend, he’s staying here because frat houses are not conducive to sleeping well enough to be an effective first responder. Tommy lets out a sigh, he could have used being alone tonight.

Shrugging one shoulder far more casually than he possibly feels, Ilya says, “I like both. Is secret, okay?”
“Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.
He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

“You didn’t answer me. How do you want me?” Shane asked again. Whatever Ilya wanted from him he would give. He made that promise to himself this morning. If Ilya wanted it fast and hard, or slow and languid, he would give it to him. Whatever he needed.
“I need you. Need you inside of me.”
“Wait, wait. Ilya,” Shane spoke, grabbing his face and forcing their eyes to meet, “are you sure? Like really sure?”
“If you do not want to is okay-”
“No, stop. I want to. Like, really want to.”
OR: Ilya is too far in his brain and Shane helps take him out of it for a little while.

Summary
Ilya stares down at the box in his hands.
Inside the small black box lies a pair of nipple clamps. Shane had painstakingly researched the best pair and settled on these: a small set of tweezer-style clamps with an attachable chain and a small screw for adjusting pressure. Each clamp has little bells dangling on the end that add just a tiny bit of weight and will make a pretty noise when Ilya moves.
There had been so many options that Shane was overwhelmed at first — some of them even vibrate! — but these ones are well-reviewed and recommended for beginners.
Shane hovers nervously around Ilya, waiting for him to say something, anything. Does he like them? Is he scared? Is he not as into this idea as Shane?
Finally, Ilya lets out a disbelieving chuckle. “You weren’t kidding about clamps.”

Summary
Ilya could’ve taken the den for himself months ago, back when he was the one working late after hockey practice and Shane was the one leaving protein bars on his keyboard like edible love notes. But no.
Now Shane got the office, Shane got the late-night calls, hundreds of contracts to read, annotate, and sign, and Shane started saying "mm-hmm" without looking up when Ilya tries to talk his ears out about the homeowners’ association gossip like he was just indulging his perfect little housewife.
