    Summary

“Why does it not–” Kaveh’s voice ripped out in a whine. “Have you not thought about it at all since then?”

A long pause. The longest one yet. “Who says I haven’t?”

Lightning flashed through the window, illuminating Al-Haitham’s face. Half of it was still wrapped in shadow, blocked by Kaveh’s head, but he could see the distance between them measured, laid flat by the light. The lightning went. The room went dark. But the memory of Al-Haitham’s wide eyes did not leave him.

    What did he want?

    “Have you?” asked Kaveh.

“Have you?” Al-Haitham’s voice was so quiet, buried under the murmur of the rain.

Kaveh swallowed. “I mean…I thought that was obvious.”

Kaveh accidentally sleeps with Al-Haitham. And then...keeps sleeping with him.

    Summary

It’s alright. The lights will be on when he returns home. A page will turn in time with the creaking of their door hinge, and the air will be filled with what remains of the scent of their morning coffee.

And Kaveh is glad, glad to be going home to a house that won’t be empty, glad to have someone hand him his briefcase on the mornings when he’s rushing to a meeting, glad to be going home.
He spaces out, noticing, remembering, watching as people come and go. It’s a terrible loneliness, having no one to share his observations with when he’s so used to it. But time marches on, and soon, he will be home.

“Kaveh,” comes Lambad’s voice again, snapping the architect out of his daze. “Your husband is here to pick you up.”

    And Kaveh thinks of Al-Haitham.

or: Kaveh gets drunk and thinks Al-Haitham is his husband. He's not (yet).

    Summary

Kaveh used to think that Alhaitham had mastered the art of ignoring him. The man would remain unflappable as he continued to read his worn copy of The Origins of Enkanomiyan Language, even when Kaveh was a hair’s breadth away from shattering the windows of their house with his severity of pitch.

No amount of screaming, threats to throw things, or violently waving in front of him could get Alhaitham to pause in his thirst for knowledge. As it turns out, Alhaitham literally just turns his hearing aids off so he doesn’t have to listen to Kaveh.

It’s for this exact reason that Kaveh has decided to learn Sumerian Sign Language.

    or,

Kaveh learns sign language just to continue bickering with Alhaitham.

“An artist is inherently selfish,” Nilou tells him. “They cannot help but create at their own expense but their craft is only for themselves.”

And if anything, does that not contradict all he knew about Kaveh?

    Summary

“I’ve designed many buildings in my career,” Kaveh begins, the attention of every single person in the crowd fixed on him. “Most of which have been extravagant pieces made to stand tall in our city and glitter.”

Kaveh glances down at what must be some notes on the podium, pausing before he looks back up, shining in the bright lights of the stage.

“But in recent years, I must admit that my focus has shifted.”

Alhaitham leans forward, watching, hoping for something he can't quite admit. Not when the truth is that he’s never known how to say that he is hungry without fear that people will see the truth that he is starving.

Or, a year after the events of the Interdarshan Championship, Alhaitham finally retires
