They were just nameless children when taken under Danzo's wing - one they struggled to escape no matter how hard they tried, regardless of the alleged 'inactivity' and 'dissolving' of the Foundation.
Once there were many but after years off killing each other off, there were less than a dozen left. And it wasn't until Imori and Kuma had killed the other's partner, that the boys were paired up for training and slowly formed a brotherly bond. They grew to only rely on themselves - for better or for worse.
Until by chance, Imori met a pink haired girl at a river. For years following the encounter, they continued to run into each other, not speaking a word between them. It was a comfortable silence for the most part, one that left questions burning on their tongues that they never dared to ask. Almost afraid of breaking the stalemate they'd been in all this time.
Then everything changed and silence was no longer an option. It was then that Sakura truly met a Shadow of the Village.

Summary
In 1993, Gilderoy Lockhart points a stolen wand at Harry Potter and Ron Weasley with the intent to Obliviate them. The wand doesn't backfire. Gilderoy's "discovery" of the Chamber of Secrets is a short-term success.
Other consequences are not short-term at all.

I was watching the Chamber of Secrets movie several years back when the scene in question began to play...and immediately I wanted to know what would happen if the wand had done what it was supposed to do. The answer got very complicated, very, *very* quickly.Blame Edgar Allan Poe for the title.
