Summary
A body is found in an alley off of the Dimwell Docks, with nothing but a cut-throat, a stamped letter, and a green ribbon to their name. When the letter points towards the Chalk, Samuel Vimes has no choice but to let diplomacy take its natural course.

Summary
It was a question of distraction. Humans needed to have more than one thing going on in their lives, not because it made them more productive but because it made them less. Captain Samuel Vimes had proven himself to be extremely efficient when he put his mind to it, and The Patrician was not amused. Oh, it was all well and good now, this time, when he was the one who benefited from these aptitudes, but there was bound to be a time in the future when Samuel Vimes would be a problem. When that happened he would need something in his life besides The Watch.
Samuel Vimes did not have hobbies, outside of drinking, and he appeared to be giving that up in favor of doing his job. The horror. He had no living family, and the only friends the Captain appeared to have were his coworkers.
Something would have to be done.

Summary
It began with a quiet confession from Lord Vetinari, and Lady Sybil making a decision about what to do with it. Vimes is exhausted, and at once frightened by and drawn to the changes that the two are introducing to his life. But then dwarfs around the city begin to go mad and hallucinate themselves into a violent frenzy, and a brutal murder is committed in the pouring rain. Maybe, just maybe, Vimes can figure it all out before the madness and the rage gets him too.

Unfortunately, it's not the sort of predicament that one necessarily escapes unscathed. Vetinari is predictably Vetinari about it all, and Vimes just doesn't hold with that sort of thing.
