The layers of smog were thickest in the sump.
There were no stars or moon to be seen, but Violet liked to imagine that stars were like the charms in Powder’s head. She remembered gently stroked her sister’s blue hair, something that always soothed Powder during infancy. Even now, in these four concrete walls, Violet could still smell her—the light smell of sidewalk chalk and oil crayons that smelled like wet clay. The memory was a cooling aloe salve on the burning trail the Warden left that evening.

Va'Zaun was a brooding city, nested in the shadow of the equator and its tuflon-clad neighbor, Piltover.
The city hung in shadow, no matter the time of day. Always cold and always dark. A wicked place, people whispered. Bloated with black markets, weakened by opium trade, and rife with witchcraft. Large, sculpted pagan temples dimpled the city, and superstition ran rife in the kingdom. Prayer was tolerated, but the practice had been strictly forbidden under Piltovan siege.

Caitlyn observes from the wall as Vi runs the routine, then comes over. She touches Vi’s lower back. Pushes, gently, guiding Vi through a rotation of her hips. Vi’s lower half lights up like a fork in a socket.

Vi misses Caitlyn’s hand when she steps away. She follows the phantom push until she’s completed the sequence.

Beautiful and hurts so good! I’ve never related to something so deeply, especially Vi grappling with her femininity and her queerness in relation to her environment, what others expect of her, aaah! So so good, big recommend.
