Summary
—“You’re giving up your pretty ‘future of America’ for a monst—”
—She grasped him at the back of the neck, nails biting in with warning. “We’re in the new world, and this is how I want to walk in it. With you.”
—In the growing heat, with the rads churning around them and through Lucy’s blood, Cooper bent to the imagined taste of chems on her tongue.
After all is said and done with their families and with Vault-Tec, Lucy chooses to ghoulify herself to be with Cooper. For 40 years, they work their way through the wasteland, as civilization blooms again. A job gone wrong lands them in an abandoned vault with no escape. As their vials run out and they skid toward feral, Lucy, ever determined, won’t take the last one.
A vault was the refuge Cooper was denied, and a vault was where Lucy was to spend her entire life. They chose the surface together, but this vault will be their mausoleum—a last choice made hand-in-hand.

Summary
—“You’ve ridden something before, haven’t you, girl? That cousin of yours, maybe?”
—“Ridden?”
—“A man, Vaultie. You ever put a man on his back and mount up? Ride him proper?”
—“You mean sex with me on top? Do people really call it that? The health manuals—”
—“Don’t need the lecture, Schoolmarm. I’m askin’ if you’ve done it.”
—Cooper could feel her shrug against his back. “Sure. Haven’t most people?”
—“Can’t say I know how everybody fucks, but I’ve had a share of fillies in my saddle.”
—Lucy’s huffed breath was cooler and wetter than the desert air against his neck. “Nobody in my vault would have any idea what that means.”
—“But you do,” said he in a low voice, “now.”When Coop gets a hold of what passes for a horse in the wasteland, Lucy gets a riding lesson.

Summary
His eyes open—she hadn’t noticed them closing—and he looks at her, bewildered. His gun is still in his hand, pointing up towards the roof with his arms slightly splayed out, but his finger still isn’t on the trigger.
She crawls over him, copying his earlier movements. She gets down and she puts a knee on either side of his hips, straddling him. She’s not a fool—she knows that if he truly wanted to, he could just blow her head off right now. Yeah, she knows that, sure. But she also knows that for some reason, some reason, he doesn’t want to right now, and she takes that and runs with it.
“Cooper Howard,” she says, and it rolls off her tongue like it’s a poison and a candy all at once, and he growls, deep in his throat. It’s reactionary and she likes it. She grabs his free hand and puts it on her throat again, veering ever so slightly closer to her chest, and she leaves her hand covering his, pushing his hand against her. He looks up at her, dazed, and she says, “Cooper Howard, what are you going to do with me?”
“Sweetheart,” he says, and he swallows, deep in his throat. “You don’t know what you’re doing.”
