“B,” Dick cries, dropping into his chest, shoulders shaking.
For an awful, awful moment, Dick realizes he’s made a mistake. He’s not twelve anymore—the kid who crawled into Batman’s lap is gone, grown up. He shouldn’t be doing this, he shouldn’t need this.
And then Bruce’s arms fold him in closer. “Shh,” he murmurs. “It’s okay.”
Dick cries harder, he’s desperate, dragging himself onto Bruce to wrap winding limbs around him. He doesn’t want to let go. Everything hurts, inside and out, and he wants…he wants…
“Dad,” Dick says. “Dad, help.”
Or, Dick gets many hugs over the years, but there's one he needs.

“Tell me more about the Batman,” Dick says.
“I—“ Bruce sighs, drops his face into his hands, brings it back up. “He’s supposed to defend the city. I’ve heard. People say he’s some—creature of the night.”
“Is he—“ Dick swallows, thinks of the man looming over him and then gentle hands shielding from rain and camera flashes. “Is he a good guy?”
“He tries,” Bruce says, at long last.
Dick nods. He gets it. He’s trying too.
“So he defends the city,” he says. Bruce nods along with him, slowly. “So he—he protects people. He catches the bad guys.”
“Yes,” Bruce says. “He does.”
Dick chews on his lower lip. “Can he kill someone?”

Dick is hit with fear toxin that makes him believe he's back following orders as Slade's apprentice, something his family didn't know about until they were faced with a fight against a Nightwing who suddenly fought with the fierceness of a trained mercenary.
