No one was quite sure who won that election, not even the candidates themselves, but they both claimed they had won. Three years down the line, and look where that had gotten them. Three years in and a little over a million dead, the end of the Second American Civil War was nowhere in sight. Florida was held by a genocidal Satanist death cult, Neo-Nazis and radical Christian terrorists were fighting over Michigan's lower peninsula, fascists were pushing from New England, Commiefornia was living up to it's name, and the Battle of Saint Louis as still raging.
If you asked Douglas Harper how he'd ended up in another universe, he couldn't tell you.

Who knows what kind of changes could've been made to it. So only two of the survivors initially get to leave, to make sure things actually work out. And Kazuichi gets tasked with something he should be good at: making sure the machines function how they should. So that his friends don't die. No pressure!
