Ilya’s head snaps back, his back arching up and away from the ice. He’s convulsing, a choking sound escaping his throat. Strong arms pull Shane away as the medical team descends.
He fights the hands on him. “Stop it,” Shane demands. He identifies Bood as his captor. “Bood, let me go. I mean it, let me go. I’ll stay out of the way.”
“No, you won’t.” Bood tightens his grip. “Just give them a second to work. Roz needs them working on them more than he needs you blocking their way. You can see fine from here.”
But Bood doesn’t understand. If Ilya is aware, if he can hear and feel and see everything happening around him, there is nothing and no one truly familiar.

"Shane," Bood says firmly. And it sounds so wrong, because Bood never calls him Shane. Shane is always Hollzy. And Bood's voice is supposed to be loud and steady, not shaky. And Shane finally, finally becomes aware enough of his surroundings to feel the trembling of Bood's hands against his waist. "Shane, please. They're working on him. We need to give them space so they can—so they can make sure he's okay."
"He's my husband," Shane chokes out, not quite managing to choke down the sob that's been building up long enough to boil over. Bood makes a similarly choked noise at that. "You need to let me go. He's my husband."
OR
Ilya gets injured on the ice during Shane's first season with the Centaurs. Shane loses his mind, a bit.

Summary
Ilya is overwhelmed, his life is falling apart, his father is dying, his brother hates him, and he feels completely alone. In a desperate move to ease the pain in his mind he asks Shane to hurt him during sex. Shane doesn't like the idea, but when Ilya threatens to find someone else to do it he reluctantly agrees. When the experience doesn't end well Shane is left to pick up the pieces and try to make Ilya feel better in other ways.

Summary
The All-Star Game is supposed to be harmless. Bright lights, broadcast smiles, forced camaraderie, famous rivals pretending none of it matters.
Shane can handle all of that. What he cannot handle is Ilya two corridors away, wearing the wrong jersey, captaining the wrong team, and acting like they are not in love.
Then a bomb threat empties the arena before puck drop. The players are told to stay in their dressing rooms. The delay becomes a lockdown. The lockdown becomes captivity.
Below the ice, with the league’s most valuable players held as hostages, Shane and Ilya have to survive the night without reaching for each other, without giving themselves away, and without letting fear turn into something worse.

With Ilya's phone lost in the chaos, Shane has no way of finding out if Ilya is injured - or how injured. So he makes his way to Tampa.
Or: The plane crash/incident in the long game but a rougher landing, more injuries (no significant/long-lasting harm), and Shane running to Tampa to see Ilya.
Story and Chapter titles are lyrics of the song 'Sleepwalking' by All Time Low that gave me the inspiration for this fic!

Shane didn’t respond. He wanted to deny it, to say that everything would be okay and that they would play on the ice together again. That Ilya had to get better in time to sign for Ottawa so they could live in the same country, so they could start their hockey camps, so they could be together. But he couldn’t lie. Not to Ilya.

Ilya sustains a career ending injury during a game against Montreal. This takes place before the epilogue after Heated Rivalry.

The sound of joy has begun to settle down into a tense silence, some muttering and asking about what was going on.
“Be careful with his head,” Hayes is saying, voice thick with something. It is disturbing to see him so serious. Bood nods, and starts moving a lump out of the seat.
Ilya raises an eyebrow, confused. “Who is passed out in my seat?”
That is when Ilya finally sees what Bood and Hayes are crowding over. It is himself, his own body, passed out and slumped against the seat in the row in front of him. There is a worrying amount of blood coming out of his nose and a cut by the back of his head. Head wounds are terribly dramatic, but Ilya feels worried about this one. Mainly because he’s floating around like a ghost.
ilya gets hit on the head during the emergency landing in Tampa and thus begins his week-long stint as a ghost. whatever bad thing that can happen, the proceeds to do so. it's definitely not fun for ilya, and definitely not fun for shane either.
