“Hell of a question, isn’t it?” Arthur hunched his shoulders, resting his elbows on his knees and putting his head in his hands. “You two are right, obviously, but also insane. In what universe do you see something wrong with your friend and immediately jump to retrograde amnesia?”
Alfred shrugged, “Weird shit happens to us all the time. Honestly, I’m surprised it took this long for one of us to go all Fifty First Dates.”
When trying to visit for lunch, Alfred finds Arthur unconscious on his living room floor. When Arthur wakes up, he has no memories of himself or anyone else. The rest of the FACE family tries their hardest to try to get his memory back, but each new piece of the past that Arthur brings up just tears open another old wound. Arthur is left wondering just what kind of person he truly is.

Alfred shed his last vestiges of decency like a butterfly undoing its metamorphosis. He slipped back into the unwelcome arms of dark and filth and made his home.
Life is finally escalating towards joy for Alfred. A safe home, friends who care for him, and a relationship with the most beautiful poet in all the world. If that means completely disregarding his origins to maintain that precarious balancing act of happiness, so be it. When an eccentric Frenchman shows up in his life to inform him that the illusion of bliss is temporary, that he’s quite literally doomed by the narrative, Alfred finds his past colliding with his present to completely decimate the future for not just himself, but everyone he’s grown to care about.

"This is what your rebellion costs," Arthur said. "Not just your blood. Theirs." He gestured to the field without looking away. "Every corpse out there followed your voice. And you led them here."
Alfred's breath hitched. "Better... to die free than live on your leash."
Arthur's mouth twisted into a half smile. "Still talking. Always talking."
He reached out, almost tenderly, and brushed a strand of soaked hair from Alfred's forehead. Alfred jerked away as if burned.
"You never learned when to stop," Arthur whispered. "Too many ideas. Too much noise. Too proud to bow, even when it would have saved you pain."
He stood, taking Alfred's musket and reversing it with practiced ease. The brass butt-plate caught the gray light.
"Maybe," he said, "in the dark and the quiet, you'll finally learn to keep your head down. And that mouth shut."
The butt came down hard against Alfred's temple.
