Summary
"Hood!"
He feels his armour cracking under the pressure of the dark ribbons. His wrists twist; shards of pain shoot up his arms and he grunts with effort, trying to shake them off. Distantly, he's aware Nightwing is fighting. Flipping over the ribbons, slicing at them, dancing around them. He's mouthing off, because of course he is, but Jason can't hear him over the blood pounding in his ears.
And then it stops. The ties loosen - not enough for him to escape, but enough so it no longer hurts, enough so that he can hear and see and concentrate on something other than the pressure.
He sees a smile in the darkness.
A new villain threatens the Bats and the League.

Bruce had been in his office earlier this morning when it sounded like every fire truck in the city was wailing down the streets. He’d asked his PA to find out what was going on and she’d reported back that a semi had drifted across lanes on the Gotham Bridge, flipped, and careened into oncoming traffic, causing a massive pile-up in both directions. He’d turned on the television at one point to see the helicopter footage; it was a mess with possibly over 100 vehicles involved. There were already several known deaths and dozens of injured motorists.
An hour later, his phone rang and his heart staccatoed in his chest when he saw the caller ID. “This is Bruce Wayne,” he said, barely keeping his voice even.
A woman on the other end of the line said, “Mr. Wayne, this is Gotham General Hospital."

Tuesday morning: a video was uploaded to one of the deep web black markets. The footage, shot on those grainy vintage camcorders. But Tim knew that boy in the thumbnail; his eyes had memorized him, the heft and shape and dazzle of him, imprinting like an afterimage.
Or: a brother is a witness; there's your tragedy.

“No,” Damian Wayne says, kneeling before Jason’s kennel. “I want this one.”
Jason encounters a villain who turns people into animals.

But he’s not, he’s not. He likes Jason-the-dog, not Jason-the-person. How could anyone like Jason-the-person? He has done such monstrous things, and he will do them again. A city full of monsters requires a monstrous touch. He will accomplish what the Bat never has, and endure the consequences alone. He always has been a martyr, huh?
“Can I come in?” Bruce asks. Seeming to realize Jason can’t answer, he adds, “Growl if you want me to leave.”
Footsteps cross the room. A weight settles at his side. Jason squeezes his eyes shut and, beneath the shelter of a boy’s blanket, pretends he is only small and waking up from a nightmare. His father has heard him crying and come to comfort him. There is no blood on his hands. No one has ever hurt him.
Dad, he thinks. I was so scared. But everything’s going to be okay now, right? You’re here now, right?
“I’m sorry, Jason,” Bruce repeats, a hand stroking his side through the blanket and the vest and the fur and all the layers Jason needs to keep himself safe around this man. “I’m so sorry for everything.”
It was just a bad dream, Jason thinks, pleads, begs. I’m just waking up.
“Please, can we talk?”
Dogs can’t talk. Dogs don’t argue, or swear, or lie. Isn’t that the point? So Jason does not answer, and Bruce exhales again, shaky. He lays down and curls around the lump of blankets that is a boy and a bad dream. Jason imagines a very big bat and its wings around him. It eases the tight clench of grief around his throat, if only incrementally.

Red Hood’s modulated voice is bone-chilling. Nearly every sleaze-bag in Crime Alley had become accustomed to the gravely robotic nature of it. The unnatural shifts in his words and the variations in pitch being just ever so slightly off putting. Borderline uncanny, yet everyone who’s heard it knows there’s a human behind that voice. A man who choses to blow a hole through someone’s skull without so much of an afterthought.
Though, no one had ever heard that voice scream.
Not until tonight.
Or, Red Hood is captured, Nightwing saves him and while helping him afterwards, puts the wrong puzzle pieces together and confronts him which does not go quite how he planned.
