“Never have I ever. First person to put down five fingers has to drink,” Tsireya pipes up helpfully, holding her palm up and splaying her fingers to demonstrate.
Neteyam groans. “Do we have to? We’re not twelve.”
“You’re just embarrassed that you don’t get any,” Lo’ak snickers.
Neteyam rolls his eyes. “I get plenty.”
“Yeah right!” exclaims Lo’ak sarcastically. Ao’nung can’t help but agree; he’s never seen the darker-skinned boy so much as flirt with another person, despite the fact that he could easily get anyone he wanted if he tried.

Until one day, the Recoms show him that he is indeed breakable.
Shaken, Jake takes his family and runs. Now, Neteyam has to deal with his trauma in a completely foreign environment. He has to pretend that everything is fine, and learn, no, perfect the ways of the Metkayina people. Neteyam doesn't let himself lean on his family; he needs to be strong. He thinks he may just fall apart under the pressure, and he will do so without being seen.

Summary
Ao'nung doesn't like anyone in that Omaticaya family. They're odd for one reason or another, and get on his nerves. But he's the most unsettled by Neteyam. He was used to rolling his eyes or being otherwise annoyed by the responsibilities that would sometime's come with being the son of the chief of the Metkayina, but coming face to face with Neteyam, another eldest son of much the same status, Ao'nung sees a reflection of himself except better. Someone who accepts the responsibilities he has, and is more than ready to take on more when the time comes. Even when being thrust into a new environment, surrounded by teasing and unfamiliar surroundings, he acts with a grace and dignity that Ao'nung can recognize he's never held once in his life. While thinking about the other members of the Suli family makes him angry, thinking of Neteyam just makes him sick.
"Aren't you embarassed? To be acting like this?"
The words ping-ponged through Ao'nung's head daily since Neteyam had said them to him. Unable to sort out any of his feelings on the other, Ao'nung tried to avoid him as much as possible.
Which isn't as much as he'd hoped.

Not in the waters of Awa’atlu, though they are a constant struggle, but in the weight of his duty and the grief of a lost home. His only goal is to keep his family safe. He expected the cold welcomes and the harsh training, but he did not expect the Olo’eyktan’s son, Aonung, to be so personally, infuriatingly invested in making his life a living hell.
Or for that hell to be so.. complicated.

The only thing he does understand is that he has to endure slowly regaining his memories unless he wants to risk brain damage. Considering the little prick he was in his youth, the hurt he ends up causing the ones it turns out he cares about, he genuinely ponders the risk. Telling him already, he is more than he remembers.
