I've been writing fanfic for... well, we'll leave it at quite a while. I have stories in Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and now Hunger Games. I post most things first at my blog, fernwithy.livejournal.com.
My favorite writer is Stephen King, who I sometimes channel when I write nightmares, but I think the most fun thing about writing fanfic is the chance to try on different styles, depending on the source material, just play with them and see how they fit. I do recommend King's book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. Toward the end, he says this, and it's about as succinct a statement about how I feel about writing as I could come up with myself:
Writing isn't about making money... or making friends. In the end, it's about enriching the lives of those who will read your work, and enriching your own life, as well. It's about getting up, getting well, and getting over. Getting happy, okay? Getting happy. Some of this book -- perhaps too much -- has been about how I learned to do it. Much of it is about how you can do it better. The rest of it -- and perhaps the best of it -- is a permission slip: you can, you should, and if you're brave enough to start, you will. Writing is magic, as much the water of life as any other creative art. The water is free. So drink.
