Kara sounds so ridiculously mopey that Alex feels a hint of a familiar tug. The tug she used to feel when Lena would start to cry after Alex had taken away the latest random object she wasn’t supposed to be playing with. An urge to chuckle, admittedly, but also to comfort.
“Kara boom!”
And there goes that accent. Despite having known Lizzie — as Ms. Walsh asked Alex to call her — since before she gave birth, it had been a shock to Alex when her daughter inherited her Irish lilt. Then Alex’s dad’s car got T-boned and shock took on a whole new meaning.
So this is who she is now: the girls’ subsequent fit of giggles not tugging her harder but falling over her like a bucket of ice water, breaking the moment.
