“Where’s your heart?” He whispers it, and it reverberates against Ajax’s pulse—or what would’ve been his pulse, if it could ever muster a beat.

    Summary

Sukuna felt a small tug on his yukata.

He turned his head and looked down his side, finding a child with his hand fisted in the black fabric at his knee. His small, pale face was turned upward, casting his stoic gaze up Sukuna's immense height. Sparkling emerald eyes were blank, face almost bored. Inky strands of hair fluttered about, sticking out at odd angles. There was a smear of ash on his cheek.

When Sukuna's red gaze met green, the child released his hold on the yukata and extended his arms upward. His chubby baby fingers flexed in a grabbing motion. The small child kept his steady, expectant gaze on Sukuna’s face.

"I think he's requesting you pick him up, my Lord," said Uraume, their voice neutral in their observation.

Sukuna bent down to the child, reaching with his top set of arms, with clawed fingers. He bared his large, sharp canines as his hands grasped the child's ribs, just beneath his arms. They felt like delicate twigs beneath his grip. It would take no effort to crush the child beneath his hands.

    Summary

Fushiguro Megumi spent years in college becoming worthy of working at Tokyo Aquarium and Rehabilitation. The top Fin Folk rehabilitation center and Aquarium run by Getou Suguru. Megumi graduates as top of his class, despite the doubt humans cast upon his kind, and the rumors that he didn't earn his grades. Finally, he has landed his dream job, and that's all he cares about.

But when a critically injured Merrow is rescued from poachers and brought to the facility, everything Megumi thought he understood about his work—and himself—begins to shift.

    ...
The dorsal fin broke the surface first, a sleek, curved blade cutting through the water without a sound. For a heartbeat, that primal recognition of an apex predator made his heart race. The Merrow swam alongside him, matching his pace exactly.

Megumi's steps slowed. The Merrow slowed with him.

The Merow followed him all the way to the feeding platform, never breaking the surface fully, never making a sound. When Megumi finally reached the platform and knelt to prepare the feeding mechanism, the Merrow sank back into the depths. But he could still feel it down there, circling in the darkness.

    Waiting.

    Summary

His world was small, small. It was loneliness and failure and being comforted in the shadows by shadows similar to him.

Or, love is not unconditional, Megumi learns. It is not blind, Sukuna assures. They're both wrong.
