Summary
“I trust you, sir,” Alexander says, his voice clear now but heavy with exhaustion. He raises his arm, fingers brush, almost trembling, against Washington’s coat. His magic flutters like a strained heartbeat. “I trust you with everything.”
Washington wants nothing more than to protect his boy from this threat. Alexander is in this state because of him. Because he was foolish, and because he has used the boy’s magic too recklessly.
“We can still run,” he suggests, much as he knows that will not work. “I can carry you. We can-”
“You know that won’t work,” Alexander protests, his voice soft again. “They will catch us. You know they will. If they catch me, if they take me… you know what will happen.” He pauses when his voice just barely cracks, betraying a hint of fear. “It’s us or them, sir. If anyone is going to take my magic, drain it away, it has to be you.”

Summary
“Alexander,” Washington’s voice catches, unable to quell the regret, the guilt rising in his throat. “That’s not true. You’ve given everything for our cause, for me. I only want-”
“To cast me aside like some broken tool,” Alexander cuts him off again, his voice soft, edged with sorrow. “Don’t lie to me. Just tell me the truth.”
Washington hesitates, torn between the truth and the small comfort he can offer his boy in this fragile moment. But Alexander’s face- the feverish glaze to his eyes, the ghost of the young man he’s meant to be, undoes him. “You aren’t broken. You’re…” He trailers off, words failing him as he steps closer, close enough to feel the heat radiating off of the boy’s fevered skin. “You’re more than anyone deserves to lose.”
