Assuming correctly that he'd been locked up, Therese and Naofumi's party decided to try and break him out. Ash’s shout did the trick, and Pikachu eyes snapped open. In the blink of an eye, he had tackled Ash to the ground and took a defensive position between him and the rest of the class, electricity building in his cheek pouches and beginning to spark outward. The entire class, Lillie especially, flinched back in their seats and looked on with their jaws hanging open. Even Professor Kukui was left speechless at the sudden movement. Before anyone else could even fully process what happened, Ash had sat up and began addressing Pikachu with his palms open and welcoming, but not encroaching on Pikachu’s space. “Hey buddy, you just had a nightmare, you’re safe.”

Summary
Ash maintained a weak bond with Greninja even after Kalos. He was used to it. It was always there. But when Lusamine's escapade with the Ultra Beast took him outside the usual dimension he existed in, it snapped the connection he had grown used to. This causes unintended side effects.
Like aggression. Like deliriousness. Like seeing dead Pokemon.Professor Kukui just wants Ash to get better. Why did there have to be so many moving pieces? First Pikachu is acting weird, then Team Rocket are the most helpful, and then he has to sit on call with a Champion and Professor Sycamore, all while he's fairly certain Pikachu is threatening a local god.
