That all changes the moment he locks eyes with a certain blonde Slytherin. His obsession with Draco Malfoy starts up again, purely a rivalry he tells himself, except why does he keep staring at Malfoy’s hands? Was that signet ring always there? Why does Malfoy keep twirling it like that?

There is something both thrilling and intimate about watching someone when they think no one is around, seeing how they behave in the vacuum of other people’s perception.
Regulus momentarily sheds his poise when he wrestles with the ancient lock, tote bags precariously balanced on his shoulders and neat curls just beginning to frizz and frazzle in the humidity. He mutters something James is too far away to hear, but it is most certainly a curse.
It’s oddly endearing.
