Summary

“He’s my dad,” Jamie says weakly, trying to explain what he knows is irrational behavior. He knows he doesn’t owe his dad anything, not his time or money or respect. “It’s easier this way.”
Roy slowly wraps his arms around Jamie from behind, pulling him back against the warmth of his chest. Jamie rests limply there, letting Roy take some of his weight. “I don’t fucking understand, Jamie.”
Jamie nods miserably. “I know. But he’ll leave me alone for a while now.”
Roy sighs heavily, his breath warming the side of Jamie’s neck. “What would he have done, if I wasn’t here?” he asks, clearly choosing his words carefully.
Jamie shrugs again. He wraps his hands around Roy’s arms, keeping him there. Roy leans his head against Jamie’s, holding him tight.

Summary
Roy rolls his eyes but stands up to pull Jamie into a chaste kiss. The innocence of the act is ruined by the way his hands grope at Jamie’s arse. “Are you wearing it?” he asks, voice low. He doesn’t need to clarify what “it” is; he can only be referring to the butt plug Jamie found tucked into the back of his cubby after the match. Well, Nate actually probably could ask him, because Roy’s relationship was similarly weird, and he had been successfully married for over a year. However, Nate was still mildly afraid of Roy, even all of these years later. He felt comfortable approaching him to talk about football and the team, but it was an entirely different thing to go poking around in Roy’s love life. If Nate started prodding him about his marriage, he might react poorly, and Nate wasn’t eager to end up on the wrong side of Roy’s fist.

At some point in between learning to ride a bike in Amsterdam and looking up which fibers were safe to tie around dicks, there had been a moment where Roy looked at Jamie and thought, I’m going to make him the best football’s ever seen. He’d known, then and there, what was coming for Jamie: the paparazzi on his tail, the fans at his feet, the clubs eager to swoop in like vultures and steal him away to take him to greater heights.
He’d been ignoring it, though. Even as Richmond’s manager, he’d scowled until Higgins took the dull paperwork and cutthroat transfer negotiations out of his hands, and he’d forgotten, somehow, that Jamie was never meant to stay at Richmond. Never really been Roy’s to keep.
Now reality was staring him straight in the face, and so were Jamie’s big eyes.

How could he explain he didn’t want Roy to think the new guy–and his old friend–was better than him? He couldn’t even quite explain it to himself. Jamie had never been a jealous person, which wasn’t always a good thing when girlfriends took his level of jealousy as his level of care. But why should he be jealous? He was Jamie fucking Tartt. If somebody didn’t want him, they could jog on, not his problem.
