"Something in him relaxes all composure and he slumps. He's home.
He takes off in a run again, ignoring how his left side protests. He only relents when he reaches the Garage. The lone door barely visible in the wall indicates he's near one of the side exits.
Perfect; limping in through the front would be asking for trouble. Almost nobody takes the stairs and hopefully everyone is in their rooms at this point. That will make it all the easier to get to his room, shed the suit, and sleep off this headache. When he wakes, he'll go to Tron for a debrief and to finish patching up. Who knows; maybe he'll actually remember what happened by then."

Summary
It's like being buried at the bottom of a very deep, very dark well. Castiel has lived enough, sinned enough, for the weight of his mistakes to pin him flat in the darkness. It's shame and guilt and grief and each memory anchors him with a razor specificity, there in the lightless silence. This is how it works, he supposes. His own thoughts will devour him alive until he sips oblivion by choice, out of sheer desperation, and the void will know peace at last.
But that was the bargain. He took that upon himself. His choice. Choice, he thinks, and would laugh if he still had a mouth to laugh with. Freedom is a length of rope.
Then, after what could have been many eternities or just one, a pang of agony comes that isn't his own.

Dean starts to feel nauseous and a lump swells in his throat as he fights off the anxiety. He knows it's irrational, he knows Cas isn't going to leave him. He tries some of the breathing techniques his therapist taught him, (yeah, he goes to therapy, fuck you) but they’re not working. He finds his feet leading him toward his and Castiel’s bedroom, and then toward the closet. He finds his trembling hands opening the drawer and rifling through the piles of flannel to find it. The last bottle of whiskey left in the house.

He keeps pushing Jack away, too scared to get close to the offspring of Lucifer, and too scared to get close to him because he reminds him so much of Cas. Sam tries to convince Dean to give Jack a chance, but Dean storms away from their fight.
Jack just wants Dean's acceptance, and to have his father, Castiel come back.
When the Seraph does miraculously reappear from the afterlife, Dean thinks he should maybe consider his views on Jack.

In the moments he’s let himself imagine it, Cas has imagined his escape as something violent: a portal tearing open and apart, the sensation of his grace ripping out of him, the Empty screaming as he went. He’s imagined tumbling back into the bunker and collapsing to the concrete, knees aching, covered in blood and oozing black goo. He’s imagined pain.
The reality is different. One moment, Cas is in the Empty, and the next, he’s not. The next, he’s standing in the middle of a familiar dirt road, stars shining above him in the ink-black Kansas sky.

Summary
Dean had died when Cas had, of course, despite the way his heart kept beating. Cas was dead and Dean was dead but there was work to be done. And so, he had moved his legs from place to place because he had to. And he had defeated one God, then beheld the (brief) birth and death of the new one from some hollowed-out portion of his self. It had been awe-inspiring, but the part of him that felt awe had died so he had merely watched, exhausted and thinking that maybe it would end.
And then it hadn’t ended. Nothing had ended; they’d finished the story god wrote but nothing had ended.Cas was dead and then he wasn't. Dean's not sure how to deal with that.

Summary
Cas comes back. Castiel is a Winchester and Winchesters always come back. He comes back and he goes home and he drags their son, the new God, home too because they deserve a happy ending(or at least as close to one as Winchesters get).
Castiel wonders: if his deal with the Empty were still in effect, would he be taken now too? It’s his happy ending, after all. Isn’t he happy?

This isn’t how he had imagined it. He’d imagined it lots of ways, but most vividly, he’d imagined it as something intimate – his vessel’s blood indelibly on Dean’s hands. Dean – an angrier crueller Dean, in theory, though the difference doesn’t seem to mean much – being brought back to himself by the shock of it. The Mark’s effect lessened – countless people protected – by the reality of Dean landing a killing blow against Cas. And maybe Dean wouldn’t quite be aware how willingly the gift had been given, but it would stay with him all the same. Cas’s devotion would be immortalised by the effect it had on Dean, and even if Cas knew he wouldn’t be around to see it, he would feel it in that final moment, as in Dean’s hand his own angel blade went home, the confirmation…
