A Spoonful of Sugar by Eleta_Preloc
As the author says in the summary: Garak on Starbase 375. Set before 'Favor the Bold'. Also: Garak exploring his own relationships to mental health and what he trusts Julian to do and not do.
The problem was – as so often was the case – the drugs.
[...]
Amongst the many things had been annoying about this conversation was exactly how well the wretched things worked. Not immediately, there’d been some trial and error, but within the space of a few weeks it was as if the dust storm that had been scouring the inside of his head for who could remember how long had subsided. He had more energy and concentration; he was more cheerful; and his hands were steadier. He was – by any definition of the word – better. Was this what it was like, to be from the Federation? He pondered this, one evening, in the bar, watching from a distance the senior staff. Did they all walk round with this sense of clarity and focus and overall wellbeing? Garak had turned that thought over a few times before setting it deliberately to one side.

Summary
Mara Jade had rehearsed this conversation the entire trip back from the Outer Rim. Depending on what she found, there had been several possible versions.
Version one: drag him out of whatever dark side insanity he’d gotten himself into. Version two: if that failed, put him down before he became another Vader. Version three — the one she hated enough not to examine too closely — discover she was too late.
Instead she arrived back in known space to the impossible news that Skywalker had apparently ... fixed it himself.
And he'd brought back a souvenir for her.

85757136Mara talks to Luke (and is prepared to do more, if needed) after Dark Empire/he knelt to the emperor reborn. He interrupts her with a souvenir (a.k.a. "unforeseen acts of decency")
“You went to the Emperor,” she said. “Do not interrupt me to argue about the wording. I am not interested. You went to him, and at some point in this catastrophe you apparently decided you could manage the situation.”
Luke’s shoulders shifted, a small tightening that on anyone else she might have missed. “Mara — ”
“No.” Her voice stayed level but only through stubbornness. “I just got back from dealing with one Jedi who thought he could walk into darkness and stay in charge of the experience. That did not inspire confidence.”

Worth the Work by SophCat
85711276Spot-on perfect Jett Reno voice as she press-gangs Caleb into repairing an unrepairable shuttle. Told from Caleb’s POV as he has a terrible, horrible, no-good very-bad day.
Also, in case I forget, the origin of “no shit, Surak.”
He sees the way she tries to care about what matters to him. And there’s no reason why finer details like the chain of command should mean anything to her. She’s still not really down with the whole Starfleet thing. For years, Caleb lived a life she would have recognized, while they were so profoundly separated that they might as well have been in different universes. Now they can talk whenever they want — and his world is so alien to her that he can’t even tell her about his day.

85044051I love this for it's perspective on 32nd century San Francisco. And because Jay-Den and Kyle are good to and sweet on each other in it.
Kyle deliberately steers them down the slower side streets to make it easier, aiming for things Jay-Den might like—they even pass a Klingon restaurant, and Jay-Den tightly nods when Kyle suggests they come back for dinner. They spend a long time in a bookstore, surrounded by traditional paper-bound stories still published in the ancient style as opposed to shiny screens. Jay-Den runs his long fingers down a withered spine, flips through brittle yellowed pages, and mutters, “How... tactile.” At Kyle’s encouraging smile, he adds, “A strangely gratifying experience.”

Comparative Theology by AstroGirl
20179534A crossover between Good Omens (more on the book side) and the Good Place, with footnotes as all Good Omens fic should have.
"What," says the demon, "is a Good Place fartknuckle doing in my office building? Don't you have a committee to form, or some of your own boogers to eat or something?"
Well, all right, he thinks, ignoring the more confusing parts of this conversational opening. Perhaps not, then.
"Ah, yes," he says. "I, er..." Why would an unfallen angel descend into Hell? To his knowledge, it has only happened once. That was several months ago, admittedly, but then Heaven and Hell have never had a particularly keen sense of the passage of time, not like those who live by human clocks on Earth. He seizes on the thought. "I, ah, came with Michael." He smiles. He hopes it looks more convincing than it feels. "But we appear to have got separated. If you could, perhaps, just point me to the exit?"
The demon snorts. "Michael? That colossal dweeb? Well, it figures. You've both got equally stupid faces."

Masculine Women, Feminine Men [Fanvid] by Tafadhali
29785647A video of 1920's and 30's film clips set to a banger of a song: "Masculine Women, Feminine Men." Second Chapter is an in-depth analysis of the cinema of the time, the song, citation of clips used, and acknowledgement that some of this is and was intended to be homophobic (in the 1930's? shocker.) But it's put together well and with such fun and love, that it's hard not to have fun watching it.

Their conversation’s stilted, strictly professional, as is both Lura and Kelrec’s wont. Nahla ignores the actual content of that talk and butts right in with a bold, “Chancellor, you’re not trying to seduce my teaches away from me, are you?” She even slings a possessive arm around Lura’s stiff shoulders, casting her War College counterpart an offended look.
It’s too easy. He instantly squawks, “What?” She may as well have slapped him across the face. He insists, “Of course not!” He couldn’t look more uptight if he tried.

Enter Nahla Ake. She had been pestering him to let her put together a birthday dinner all week. When he refused, she started pestering him to at least take the day off (not like he could. Sobbing cadets wait for no man's birthday). This morning, after she sentenced Lythe to fewer hours of menial labor than the girl deserved and sent her on her way, she had asked him if he would mind if she got him a present. Nothing big, just something to show her affection.
He had lost it and snapped "You can wear your damn boots to our planning meeting this afternoon. And have your uniform actually meet regulations for the first time in your long life."

"Nevasa," Spock said, sharply; Earth starcharts used Earth names, and so did Starfleet. That had never bothered him before, but it suddenly seemed like another violation, as if erasing Nevasa's name was part of erasing his people. "Between Nevasa and Sol."

82168711A single scene between the two chancellors, that is bittersweet for what it is and what it yearns to be.
She thrusts her thermos over, and he gets a faint whiff of something herbal and sweet. Visible steam wafts out of it. She gestures, trying to give it to him, and a part of him really wants to take it, but his brain kicks in, and he doesn’t. She rolls her eyes and pulls it back to take a long sip, idle and indulgent, but that means nothing—he knows her taste buds are as off-kilter as the rest of her. She tries to pass it back to him as though she’s proven it’s not poison. He knows she wouldn’t poison him. Probably.
He says, “That’s unhygienic.” They’re not at that stage yet. Maybe there is some world, far in the absurd future, where he and Nahla Ake are comfortable enough to share a tea cup, where the thought might even thrill instead of repulse him. It would repulse him with most people. With her, he hesitates, overrun with what ifs.

The story is in Russian, but I found the translation through Google Chrome to be delightfully readable and the story captured a feeling I see in their relationship - it’s sweet and romantic without filing the rough edges off the characters that make them who they are. So no writing sample here

He fell, and the galaxy kept turning.
Fifteen years after his fall, Luke Skywalker tends his gardens in a Force-null prison on Myrkr: isolated, monitored, and mostly forgotten by the galaxy he once tried to save.
Then Mara Jade shows up dying from a Vong bioweapon, and suddenly the Republic might have a use for a caged Sith Lord after all.
The question is whether Luke Skywalker can be trusted to save the galaxy – or if letting him out will just give them a different kind of apocalypse.
"When have impossible tasks ever stopped me before?"
Or: I present for your enjoyment: "what if the NR took Dark Empire seriously," combined with "what if the Vong War but you ignore all of the EU after Dark Empire," plus "what if dark-ish! Luke during the NJO." If that sounds fun, you are my people.

73197566A lovely novel with a "dark-ish" Luke (he's working on it, sort of, okay?) pulled from a prison cell on Myrkr by Mara Jade because things with the Vong have gotten just that bad. All of the best of Ledgends is here, and I ended up binging it in a single evening because it was just that good.
"Luke." Mara's voice cut through. "You're having a breakdown about your niece's alcohol consumption now. That wasn't on the schedule."
"My breakdown schedule is very flexible," Luke said into his hands. Then he looked up at Jaina again. "You're really Han and Leia's kid. I can tell. The attitude is – " He gestured vaguely. " – unmistakable."
"Thank you," Jaina said, because she was choosing to take that as a compliment.
"That wasn't – " Luke stopped. "You know what, sure. Take it as a compliment. You're sixteen and terrifying. Just like your mother."
"And a delinquent," Jaina added helpfully. "Like my father."
"Yes. That too." Luke's smile was tired but real. "This is my life now. Constant heart attacks and terrible decisions."
"Welcome to the family," Jaina said.

There Shall Come Up Briers and Thorns by sentientcitizen
244842Per the Author’s summary: In the month of November, the year of our Lord two-thousand-and-one, Methos and Yeshua talk for the first time since Gethsemane. (I read this before the others in the series, and it’s my favorite of the trio; it stands just fine alone.)
It’s late November, the brisk air clouding his breath and leeching the nimbleness from his fingers, when Methos sees Yeshua again.
For one heart-stopping moment he finds himself frozen in the little coffee-shop’s doorway, unable to step forward despite the press of people behind him. The buzz of warning rattles against his skull as he stares at the familiar face, the dark olive-toned skin and broad nose so very different from what the so-called masters had painted. His curly hair, rich brown, has been cropped short, and his full beard is now a neatly trimmed patch on his chin, but it’s the change in his eyes that leaves Methos wondering for the briefest of moments if it really is Yeshua sitting there
Yeshua smiles, and raises his mug in greeting.
