Summary
There are many reasons that Merlin is a horrible manservant. Most of the time, Arthur is the one who suffers from Merlin’s unscrupulous behaviour, and it’s this fact only that has saved Merlin’s job. Because, as much as Merlin lacks the qualities for being a properly attentive manservant, his unique view on the nobility’s importance—namely, non-existent—means that he is probably the closest thing Arthur’s ever had as a friend.
Not that he’d tell Merlin, obviously.
Or: Five times Merlin wears Arthur's clothes out of need, and one time because Arthur asks him to.

Summary
“So, Merlin,” Arthur says, and leans forward. Despite having climbed a tower that’s taller than the Big Ben, he doesn’t have a lock of hair out of place. Merlin despises him for that, a little bit. “What are you currently doing in a tower that seems to have no entrance and does have a large dragon on top, which really, that doesn’t help with being perceived as a princess, you’re aware?”
“How did you get past Kilgharrah?” Merlin wonders.
“Dragons sleep too, Merlin.”
Or: Merlin has stuck himself in a tower in a desperate attempt to make himself focus on his dissertation. A lot of knights seem to be under the impression that this makes him a princess in need of rescue, but fail to climb all the way up—that is, until Arthur.

Summary
“I think he’s awake,” Arthur calls out, and the noise bludgeons Merlin’s head like a hammer, and he presses his eyes closed as if to force away his ability to hear as much as his ability to see. It doesn’t work well for him, and he chokes on a breath. His throat is on fire as he starts coughing.
Gods, he’s ill. He thinks he’s very ill.

Summary
“Do you want more wine, too? Come on, Merlin, don’t stand around so uselessly.”
“As opposed to sitting around uselessly?” Merlin quips, but he comes over easily to pour more wine into Leon’s goblet. He lets him, his eyes careful on Merlin to see if his eyes will glint again, the colour of fire against the midnight sky, so bright and fiery.
But all Leon sees is blue. “Thank you, Merlin,” he mutters.
Or: Five times someone finds out about Merlin’s magic and decides not to tell Arthur, and one time they realise that Arthur already knows everything there’s to know.

Summary
“I was just pointing out,” Gwaine says cheerfully, “that Merlin’s talents must clearly come from you. You raised him, and he’s now teaching our esteemed king in rational thought—”
“Gwaine,” Arthur says, raising his eyebrows.
“It’s not so much teaching as steering in the right direction,” Merlin says, and receives a tap to his head for that. He just jostles his shoulder against Arthur’s, and Arthur’s expression softens. “He’s not so bad, really.”
Or: There’s a reason you shouldn’t keep secrets from your mother. During a visit to Ealdor, Gwaine happens to mention Merlin’s father. This shouldn’t have as many consequences as it does, and one by one, several truths come to light.
