“I am forgetting what she was like,” Ilya says quietly. His voice comes out choked. “I have few memories, little moments. I remember how she made me feel. But I have lost so much of her.”
Shane holds Ilya tighter.
“And one day,” Ilya’s voice breaks. Shane feels wetness on his shirt. “I might be like my father. I will have nothing left of her. All of it will be gone.”
Ilya is awfully, terribly scared of forgetting his mother. In realizing he might, he picks up the pieces of her that are left.

They hadn’t had the diagnosis back then because there was no way Grigori Rozanov had a son with depression. He had a difficult teenager who needed discipline and who could be lazy at times, just like his mother.
Attitude like that wasn’t cured with coddling.
To go from that to the support Shane seems to show so easily, to be treated kindly when Ilya is not being the best version of himself, is a mental whiplash. It makes the past feel more painful and it makes Ilya want to be better now. With proper support he should be better, right? To be mad at that support feels ungrateful. Sometimes he wonders if support like this could have saved his mother. He wonders if he’d be dead without it.

Ilya is having a rough time. Shane tries to make it better. They discover that while talking might sometimes be difficult, it is necessary.

Summary
Ilya wanted too much from his life here. He'd somehow deluded himself into thinking Alexei would start to feel sympathy for him. That his father would find enough clarity to see Ilya for who he is. That someone, anyone, would tell Ilya they cared about him at all.
Impossibly, he has Shane on the phone, not asking Ilya for anything. He's just giving Ilya what he couldn't ask for. Showing Ilya it's not too late, and that he matters to someone.
He matters to Shane.
It couldn't be enough that Shane speaks two languages fluently, could it? He had to go and learn the language of Ilya's heart, too.
After the funeral, Shane asks Ilya to tell him everything in Russian. Ilya says as much as he can.
