In hindsight, he couldn’t believe he’d fallen for it. The oldest trick in the book, and he’d barely thought twice. If D3rLord had told him that gullible was written on the ceiling, he probably would’ve fallen for that too.
He had sat there for what felt like hours, staring at his laptop. The screen seemed like it was laughing at him. ‘You Died!’ was displayed in large, classic Minecraft text. That was it. No button to respawn or quit. No option to come back, no shot at stopping the King and Derek from merging. No second chance to save his friend.
He heard the fireworks going off. They’d been going for a while now. Some distant, some close. Every loud bang reminded him, with a stab to his heart, that his friend would probably never get to experience another new year.
You are real.
You are special.

Avery awoke suddenly. Derek was at the edge of the bed, holding his head in his hands and muttering. Even if he was whispering, it was as if Avery could feel him and woke up because of it.
Avery put a hand on his shoulder, leaning on Derek's side of the bed. Derek was startled, but turned around slowly anyway. He looked at his Heart, Avery, with surprise. His paranoia turned against him again. That isn't Avery, it isn't your Heart, he heard their hushed voices.
He leaned towards Avery, and even if he wasn't sure if it was really his Avery, he put his head on his shoulder. -

“Please… it hurts to think that he’s out there suffering while I’m here sitting just fine. I can’t even sleep anymore! I… I can’t…” Tears started rolling down Avery’s cheeks. Here he was, begging for something almost impossible. “Please, I…” He couldn’t even speak anymore, he was too caught up sobbing about this man he’d never met. His head in his hands as he broke down for the first time since what happened.
