“Plan,” Matt exclaims as he bursts down the stairs. “Plan, plan, really good plan. Really fucking good plan, Jay.”
Jay, who had been half asleep on the couch, blinks awake. He had been dreaming. They had been on a picnic in the park. It was empty save for the two of them and, actually, maybe they were in a meadow. There were flowers everywhere and they were sharing a big sandwich, and Jay was wearing a — huh. Matt stands on the couch over him, a foot on either side of his body, and Jay watches as he writes in big letters: Dress Plan. And then underlines it a few times.

In a move that has become simultaneously less (since ‘08) and more (since ‘25) prevalent in their lives, Matt throws himself bodily on top of Jay and wakes him up. It’s April 20th. What, in the aftermath of the 4/20 of yore, circa 2017, has become the most important day of the year. Closely rivaled by the day they finally got together, which, like, hasn’t swung around again yet. But when it hits this year, Matt has plans. Biiiig plans.

Summary
It’s taking longer than Jay thought it would to get back on his feet.
He can’t afford his own place, so he’s still living with Matt. They move through each other’s lives like the other is invisible. Or, at least, that’s true of Jay. Matt keeps doing things for him that Jay would tell him to stop doing if he could see him. Jay wakes up and finds his water bottle full, finds breakfast on the kitchen counter with a fork and knife on a napkin alongside it, finds his bed made and his laundry done. These are, maybe importantly, things that Matt has never done for him before. And still.
