    Summary

Eddie expects there to be no answer – last time Buck was suspended, he had to literally be dragged from the bed – and is surprised when he hears shuffling. Swinging the door open, Buck stands in shorts and workout gear and a thin sheen of sweat all over, his headphones stuck in his ears. “Uh, hi?” He asks, taking in the two, plucking his headphones out. “Sorry, did we have plans?”

“No!” Chris yells. “This is a surprise attack!”

Then he launches himself at Buck.

To Buck’s credit, he handles the preteen leaping for a hug as well as anyone could, not even taking a step back before wrapping his arms around him and lifting Chris in the air. Chris giggles as he does so, Buck even spinning once to make them louder.

    And Eddie?

Eddie is undone. Eddie tells that box he has filled with Buck and feelings and thoughts to fucking shut because now is not the time to confess his love for his best friend.

    Summary

“I-I need you do to something for me. I—” There’s a terrible wheeze and Bobby can almost see the man’s pinched face, desperately trying to smooth any indication of harm. “I need you to tell—”

“No.” Bobby says strongly into the radio, his eyes never wavering from the collapsed building. He feels himself losing it – he feels the same terrible ache snake in his spine then he did that night, smoke clouding his lungs. “No, firefighter, you’re not doing this. We’re clearing debris and we’ll—”

    “Please?”

    It’s small, almost childlike.

How could he ever deny a dying man’s request?

After reevaluating his career, Eddie finds himself in Texas. It’s alright, if not a boring existence. In his selfish moments, he longs for the adrenaline rush of a fire, the open air on his face. But he’s… fine. He has to be. Fine, that is. He moved for Christopher, his life in L.A. nothing more than a painful memory of what could’ve been. Eddie’s fine.

When his Abuela watches the news, Eddie knows everything will change. A story about a firefighter, trapped in a building with kids. A firefighter wheezing goodbyes for those who have left him. A firefighter from the 118.

    Eddie is not fine.

    Summary

Evan Buckley has spent his whole life trying to earn a love his parents were never willing to give him.

When one final confrontation ends with the Buckleys cutting him off completely, Buck spirals hard enough that the people who actually love him have no choice but to close ranks around him.

Bobby and Athena remind him he has always been their son in every way that mattered. Maddie stands beside him even when it means facing the family that hurt them both. Eddie stays, steady and furious and impossibly gentle, through every bad night.

Then Buck does something no one expects.
    He sues his parents.

What follows is ugly, brutal, and public—but Buck wins. And when the settlement finally comes, he uses it the only way Buck knows how: to build something good from the wreckage.
A house. A future. A road trip with the family that chose him.

And somewhere along the way, Buck realizes he isn’t trying to survive his life anymore.
    He’s ready to live it.
With Eddie. With Chris. With Theo. With all of them.

    Summary

Chris remembers, suddenly, the days after his mom died, the feeling of dread that lingered under his skin. The way it slowly bubbled up, over the years, until he couldn’t be this kid anymore, this kid who could look at the world and not see danger in every corner. He wishes that Theo will never be like that. He knows, living with a first responder, that the odds of him turning out any other way are against him.

“Hey, Theo,” he says suddenly, the words spilling from his lips without permission. “Do you think Buck is your dad?”

Christopher isn't sure how he feels about Theo, or what he means for him and Buck. When they're caught up in a disaster alone, he has plenty of time to figure it out.
