“Man down!”
Trent snaps his gaze to the side, fear sliding down his spine at Ray’s panicked call. In the brief second he has his eyes off of their shooter, he’s able to see the prone form of Clay, and knows it’s forever going to be seared into his brain.
He feels sick as he provides cover fire. This can’t be happening. Jason just lost his wife, they cannot go home and tell him they lost his rookie, too.

Summary
It’s been four months since Soap found out exactly how bad stims affect him. Four months since the 141 had the worst scare of their life, thanks to a miscommunication of epic proportions.
Four months, and Soap is finally, finally getting his personal space back. (Sort of. Not really. He doesn’t mind all that much.)
Four months, and Simmons is casually talking to him in the mess hall after training with the rooks, mentioning something about their old TO coming back to base, when Price, Ghost, and Gaz all freeze up.
Which is a little weird, because— well, for two reasons. One, because that’s just a weird reaction for the 141 to have in general. and two, because—
—because Soap doesn’t remember ever having this guy as his training officer.

They’re moving, they have a plan, and then a couple of fuckwits literally decide to blow up that plan.
More importantly, they decide to blow up Bravo.
He’s screaming at his team, reaching for Clay who’s on the other side of the small space between cars. He shoves Sonny at about the same time Clay shoves Brock, forcing their brothers to the ground. Jason’s foot catches, or maybe Ray pushed him from behind, but he ends up on his knees going to his stomach.
He looks up and Clay is still standing.

He really, really cannot do this anymore.
His head is all over the place, emotions swirling around that don’t even feel like his, making him feel things that he doesn’t even understand. It’s had him off kilter and despite how hard he tries, he can’t keep Raqqa inside the box he's stuffed him in.
Clay is telling him to send it, he has the shot he needs to take it because if he doesn’t, and this man gets away, then Ray is the reason that they don’t successfully decapitate the heads of the Las Sombras cartel.
Then Ray’s own ability to operate is going to be questioned even more, then Bravo is going to be responsible for another bad op and they’re not going to have a team for Jason to come back to.

This collection of short stories is a bit of writing practice, because I have been cursed with the ultimate double whammy: hating to post unfinished works, and yet struggling with being unable to finish many of the fics I attempt to write–a problem so bad in fact, that 95% of everything I have started writing with the intention of posting still lives, unfinished, in the depths of my computer files. These are based on the Whumptober 2025 prompts, but I am not writing them in order, which is why you may see placeholder chapters. My aim was originally to finish all 31 stories and forever conquer the almighty curse, however due to life happening I will be leaving it at 10 chapters (if I get more time, and more importantly if the hyperfixation continues, I will attempt to finish).
All events portrayed are fictional and, while I have taken effort to make each story as realistic as possible, my work is not intended to correctly represent the lifeguarding profession and/or appropriate first aid.
