HJ just likes the sick feeling it gives him, knowing he can’t cross it. Likes that pushback. Something he can’t control.
He’s patient about it – so patient. Hundreds of years of patience. Eventually, humanity will carve out some new route, or dam upstream, and HJ will have this too.

After the defeat of Straka and the victory tour of Zood, the new crew of the Zephyr Mark II bids farewell to Montgomery LaMontgommery. Somewhat less enthusiastically, they bid farewell to the remaining Gotch brothers. Samwell sends them home to manage the Gotch estate and finances, and to move their family business in a better direction.
Brycewell, Roywell, and Johnwell Gotch expected this to be a chance to stand on their own, to prove themselves to their brother and make better choices in life. They didn’t expect to find their ancestral home abandoned. Or perhaps not as abandoned as they would have liked.

Perhaps the desperation he felt was tainting the tone of his words or reflecting in his eyes, because Maxwell nodded slowly, releasing his gentle grip on his wrist and dropping his hands to his lap.
