What if there were no mass effect relays?
What if the species of the galaxy hadn’t met yet?(This story is a Shepard and Garrus version of Project Hail Mary with a few changes, twists, and romance between the two. If you haven’t read the book or watched the movie, this does contain spoilers.)
Shepard is on a mission to stop Astrophage from dimming Earth’s sun, and for that she needs to investigate a sun that was not infected by the Astrophage- Tau Ceti. Her crew did not survive their medically induced comas for the 4 year trip to Tau Ceti. Leaving her alone in an unknown part of space to save Earth.. or so she thought.
Garrus was here for the same thing, to stop the Astrophage from dimming Palaven’s sun. He never thought in a million years he’d be making first contact with an alien race.

Summary
In order to secure the support of the turian Fleet, Shepard's sent to Palaven's moon Menae in order to find Primarch Fedorian. It's difficult to focus on the mission when the whole world is burning and she has no idea if Garrus is still alive or how she's supposed to do any of this, and it feels like she's right on the edge of falling apart... It all comes together to break her on that battle-scorched moon, when she sees something she had been praying she never would.
TL:DR: During Priority: Palaven, Shepard sees a painfully familiar-looking Marauder.
