Summary
Wei Wuxian has been an alpha his entire life.
At least, that's what everyone thought. That's what he believed himself to be.
But after the destruction of the Lotus Port, he makes a decision that will change his life forever: he gives his own golden core to Jiang Cheng to save his brother's future. No one knows the secret, and Wei Wuxian has no idea that the consequences of the sacrifice go far beyond the loss of his cultivation.
As the world fears the man known as Yiling Laozu, his body slowly changes. The former alpha becomes something he never knew existed, and his past hides a secret he's trying his best to bury.
When he reunites with Lan Wangji and Jiang Cheng at an inn, the carefully constructed walls begin to crack. A bout of illness, a few questions asked at the wrong time, and unspoken pieces of the past slowly come together to form a picture no one wants to see.
Lan Wangji knows something is wrong. Jiang Cheng senses that Wei Wuxian is lying. And Wei Wuxian becomes increasingly desperate to convince everyone—and himself—that everything is fine.
But there are secrets that even the Burial Mounds cannot forever absorb.
