Summary
It’s been a year since their fight with Renoir, yet to Lune, it remained an inescapable dream, a nightmare haunting her mind, playing on a loop again and again.
When she would open her eyes in the morning, dazed with sleep, she could still feel the sticky mixture of sweat and blood all over her body.
When she would shower, she still felt the phantom pain radiating out of every wound and scratch, the exhaustion of her muscles settling in, as Maelle exchanged final words with Renoir. She felt the adrenaline slowly leaving her body as they watched the petals flying from Renoir’s disintegrating form.
The sensations of her body from that day have permanently edged their way into her memory. But that was the easy part of it. Easy to push out of her thoughts with a good enough distraction, almost manageable when hidden under piles and piles of work, steps of routine, half-hearted conversations. The hard part was what happened after.

Summary

Summary
When you Paint, there are rules. In her grief, Aline broke them all.
The crack in the stability of the Canvas was all it took for the Writers to thread their own craft through it, letting them pull out a handful of inhabitants as their tethers to their world snapped. They explain it as a mercy to the confused members of Expedition 33 when they wake up in Paris. They tell them it was a rescue mission, to save them from the whims of the Painters—that this fight is now theirs, too.
But Gustave, Lune, Sciel and a very confused Maelle were not the only ones plucked from the Canvas. Beneath the Writer’s Council, Verso wakes in a locked cell, a new piece on the board of their war. Clea Dessendre, on the warpath and determined to get revenge on the Writers, finds herself with the unlikeliest of allies. And above the music halls of Paris, a dead man wakes back up.
Turns out this Expedition might not be finished, after all.

Summary
One was not enough. Perhaps Maelle needs two brothers to convince her to choose life, and to heal.
Surrounded by her brothers, Maelle wants to remain strong. She wants to convince them both that staying here is the right choice, and that they only hurt her with their arguments. She is the Paintress. She should not feel powerless. She will not let them dictate her choices.

She looks like a proper lady. Fit to the extravagance of the strange manor. She could host whimsical parties, music and dancing congesting the opulent halls. She could turn away leagues of suitors from these very steps. She could age past her predicted years before Gommage.
