As the thought of sleep floats through his head, Jayce sees a bright truck station logo present itself above a hill like an angel spreading its wings. He blinks his trailer to the right, making sure the lane is clear before he slides the rig over the dotted white line and exits the highway. The engine hisses and groans as he slows her down, but Jayce just coos sweetly and taps her wheel. The grumbling only means she’s doing her job right.
Heading west across the country, Jayce meets a lot lizard named Viktor.

Summary
Viktor pads barefoot across the wooden floorboards of their bedroom, the faint creak familiar beneath his feet, and pushes the window open to let in the petrichor-scented air.
Jayce watches from the bed, the sheets pooled around his waist, one arm still extended where Viktor had been. “What’s it look like out there?”
“Wet,” Viktor says, leaning on the sill, taking in their little slice of the world. The field has become a shallow lake, the path to the road a ribbon of mud. A small brown bird darts from one bush to another, shaking water from its feathers. He watches it for a moment before adding, “Very wet. Peaceful, though.”
