For the first time since this god awful operation started the Fortune Teller Ghoul stopped short. His wizened face went completely slack. He fingered at the grooves on the dice demarcating numbers in something like astonishment.
“You,” he said slowly, “you really are something, aren’t you?”
“Oh really?” Aki pitched his voice to sound high and immature just like the mission demanded, only just managing not to grit his teeth. The naive schoolboy act had become grating five minutes into the job. “How so?”
The ghoul’s blind eyes glittered in the dim light. “You have a long path ahead of you, boyo. There’s a fork in the road less taken, and the one you're on is going to eat you alive.” He kept looking at Aki with cloudy eyes but it was like he was seeing something entirely else– seeing something beyond even the room they were in. “It's almost a shame I won’t be around to see it.”

Money's no good for just sitting around, though. You have to do something with it, put it somewhere. Back when Jason first moved to the manor, he got more pocket money than he ever did selling tires at the chop shop. Crisp dollar bills, no strings attached. Bruce never asked how Jason spent it. He was real old money like that. But Jason didn't like the idea of keeping more than he needed. Or at least that's what he told himself, on days where he was homesick for the summer air of Crime Alley. Jason took the bus back there a lot, back when he was a kid. He didn't speak to anybody. Crime Alley had already restructured itself around his absence by then. Some time after he became Robin, he began leaving money at his & Max's spot with a little guilt. The guilt of leaving without saying goodbye. Of saying goodbye at all. He's not sure what Max ever did with it, but he liked skulking in the shadows, waiting for Max, watching him. He'd become good at that by then.
Maybe it's nostalgia. Or maybe Jason's homesick for a time that doesn't exist. He doesn't know. But he knows—with his skills—that it can't take long to track Max down again.
That's how it starts, anyway. And as with most things, it snowballs from there.

Talia considers that for a moment. It is a very short moment.
"Send him up," she decides.
After struggling with the effects of his failsafe, Jason decides to seek refuge with Talia in Metropolis.

"I suppose not," she concedes. "My point still stands. I am sure your father wants to see some grandchildren within his lifetime as well."
Jason snorts. "Dick can take that bullet."
"But they would not be mine," Talia reminds him. "Not the way yours would be."
Jason pauses for so long, Talia has to check to ensure that he hasn't actually left the room. Then, he glares up at her, two little holes amidst a face full of white. "You can be really manipulative, you know that?"
Talia hums, pleased with herself as she returns to her face. "So I've been told."
Jason gets up and walks over to her, his arms boxing her in until her neck is loosely locked within his grasp. "You're too young to be a grandma anyway," he says, bonking her head lightly with a closed fist before letting her go.
