Harry gained a connection to the Horcrux when he “befriended” the diary. The connection was the diary showing him old memories, and attempting possession. What the diary didn’t know was the Potter family connection to the Peverells. Death and Time are not things to mess with Potter about.
Non Diary Tom learns this the hard was when transfer student Hadrian Peverell shows up, and attempts to kill him.

Summary
On October 31, 1981, a piece of the Dark Lord Voldemort's soul was ripped away from the whole and found a new home within his mortal enemy, the infant named Harry James Potter. What he never expected was that the child, raised so tenderly until then by his parents and their closest friends, would be brimming with the one thing he had always scorned - love. Summary
Harry knew that sometimes people were just stupid. Take soulmates, for example. Wizards thought so much about them, but Harry knew better. Soulmates didn't matter, just like blood didn't matter. After all, Harry shared blood with Dudley, but it didn't make him a bully like his cousin. So what that his soulmate was a Dark Lord? That didn't make Harry evil either.
But people were stupid, and if Harry's time with Dursleys taught him anything, it's that the best way to deal with one's freakishness was to hide it.
So he does exactly that.
