Summary
For a long time- a minute, perhaps, though that ought not to be a long time by either of their standards- Dan Heng does not speak. His gaze searches the horizon. Blade does not know what for. Perhaps, for a Nameless, there is meaning in the searching itself.
When he finds his words, they are painstakingly direct. Blade turns at the sound of his voice, but Dan Heng remains staring into the distance as he speaks. "I wish… we had learned sooner that we didn't have to be enemies."
I feel the same, Blade cannot say. "There was never-"
"I know," Dan Heng says, too quickly. His voice softens again, as if he'd caught himself off-guard, too. "I just wish we had, at the very least, been afforded the opportunity."

Summary
"It's funny," he says conversationally, "I barely thought about you while we were apart. I thought of you from time to time, but there were always more urgent matters at hand. I never missed you. But now that I have you"- he finally lets his grip on Blade's hand tighten- "I miss you in a way I can't even begin to explain. I miss an imagined world where I wasn't ignorant enough to know how to move on." He lets his free hand curl lightly over Blade's shoulder, with just the right timing that he'll never know if it's the touch or his words that made Blade flinch again in response. "Do you feel the same? Do you regret letting me get away from you?"
Blade's response is soft, and not at all gentle. "Of course not. You haunt me."
In which Dan Heng pokes the proverbial hornets' nest, and finds proverbial hornets.

"It's not… about control," He says haltingly. Or rather, it's not the magic he fears losing control of, but rather everything else. It's sort of like organising the data bank. Every entry has a fixed category, definite links. If data is uncategorised, if no lines are drawn, the whole thing would bleed into a chaotic mess. Likewise, the only way Dan Heng can hope to keep his identity intact is by distancing himself from irrelevant data. The past that isn't his stays shut in a box on the bottom shelf, and if someone else moves it into view, Dan Heng will put it back where it belongs. "Not… the kind of control you're thinking about, anyway."

Are you working?
Yingxing scoffs to no-one in particular. It’s the middle of the night, of course he’s working. He puts down the project he’s gotten carried away with and traces the word yes with one finger against his palm. Stay where you are, Dan Feng writes back.
Well, he wasn’t exactly planning on doing anything else.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, the door to his workshop swings open. The hinges are silent but the person behind them is markedly not.
“Yingxing. I need something sharp.”
Okay. Not what he was expecting.

Summary
The dead refused to stay buried in Planarcadia.
When remnants of Shuhu begin resurfacing within thousands of unwilling hosts, the only viable solution is as horrifying as it is inevitable: Ren must become a vessel once more, taking every fragment into himself before the abundance can spread beyond control. Dan Heng agrees to help stop the disaster.
He does not agree to lose Ren in the process.
As old sins resurface and the line between hatred, devotion, and fate begins to blur, the two of them are forced into the orbit they have spent lifetimes trying—and failing—to escape. Because some bonds survive reincarnation. Some wounds never close. And some forms of love are indistinguishable from destruction.
In the end, what began with Dan Feng and Yingxing can only end with Dan Heng and Ren.

He took a first step, too, all those months ago, a first unsteady step onto this train and amidst people he didn’t feel worthy of.

"You've been doing that a lot," Stelle states it like a fact once Sunday leaves the car, book in hand. The room feels dimmer all of a sudden, and Dan Heng isn't sure why. Another thing to ponder.
"Do what?" Dan Heng knows perfectly well what she's talking about, and he knows she knows he knows what she's talking about. Regardless, Dan Heng finds himself being evasive with no clear purpose. It feels a tiny bit strange.
"Look at people like they're a chess game you're about to lose," They say, eyeing the actual chess game in front of them with a disgruntled expression.

"Also," She says, totally nonchalant. "Dan Heng has been staring at Sunday like he's a particularly delicious piece of meat.""Huh!?" March squeaks, her eyes wide and unblinking as she stares at her.
"Huh?" Dan Heng echoes, willing the heat that is now slowly creeping up his neck to dissipate.
"Huh?" Stelle blinks at them, as if they hadn't said that insane string of words.
