Summary
Eddie climbs onto the bed. They sit side by side, legs extended, two letter L’s protruding off the page. Instead of pressing play like Eddie is expecting, Buck laughs.
“What?” Eddie asks, an instinctive smile caressing his lips.
Buck grips his jaw, thumb brushing over his teeth before he bites at the broad nail, stifling. “Just—did you ever see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?”
Eddie nods. “Gene Wilder.”
“That’s the one,” Buck chuckles around his thumb, then lets it slide free. “You know the grandparents?”
Then Eddie’s laughing too. “Jesus,” he says on an exhale.
“I’m just saying,” says Buck, still giggling. “I’ve seen our future, and it’s bright.”
Or: God created the world in seven days. It only takes Eddie six to surreptitiously move into Buck’s house.

Summary
Buck’s hands were roughened and slightly reddened across the knuckles, like he’d been chopping wood or working outside without gloves. There was a fading bruise near his wrist, yellow at the edges. His eyes were bloodshot. There was an unevenness to the stubble along his jaw where he’d either stopped caring halfway through shaving or never started. All surface details. None of them what Eddie actually wanted to know.
How bad is it today? How often do you hurt? What happens at three in the morning when the cabin gets too quiet and your head gets too loud. Do you still count the hours since the last pill or has that stopped meaning anything? When you said you needed space, did you mean from everyone or just from seeing what you’ve become reflected back in our faces?
Buck shifted under the weight of the silence. “Say it.”
Eddie frowned. “Say what?”
“What you came all this way to say.”
OR Buck leaves because he thinks he is a burden, Eddie follows.

Summary
"Come on. Clothes off. We're cuddling for survival."
Eddie is so cold he's not entirely sure this is real. He might be hallucinating. He might have already died and this is some kind of purgatory situation, because "Buck taking his clothes off and telling Eddie to do the same" feels like exactly the kind of scenario Eddie's subconscious would generate to torment him in the afterlife. Hey Eddie, his dead brain is saying, here's everything you ever wanted but were too chickenshit to reach for. Watch Buck's abs flex while you freeze to death. This is your eternal punishment for never going to therapy.
“We’re not cuddling.”
Or,
Eddie knows how to survive everything except this.- Language:
