Summary
Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. In those days we really believed that to be the world's one and only truth.
When Danny first watched Fullmetal Alchemist, he'd laughed at the idea of equivalent exchange. Losing his leg hadn't gotten him anything. It only took from him--his ability to walk, his place in the league, his brother. Sure, his new life in Amity was fine, but it didn't take away the great losses he'd experienced. None of it felt equal.
Years later, Danny finds himself in Gotham, prey to the people his mother had thrown him to. He's prepared to lose his life, but then Damian appears, and suddenly Danny understand the desperation Edward felt when he'd sacrificed his arm so readily for Alphonse.
I don't think of equivalent exchange as a law of the world anymore. I think of it as a promise, between my brother and me, a promise that someday we'll see each other again.

Sure, both knew it was impossible, but on the bad days it offered a bit of comfort to imagine what a reunion might look like. Surely, it'd be full of sobbing and hugging and questions about how and why and when. They'd declare how much they missed the other, how they loved each other and didn't regret choosing them over the League. They could neve regret choosing each other over the League. It was a kind dream, but it was just that. A Dream.
Never, in all their wildest imaginings, did they think they would meet again in a coffee shop of all places.
