Summary
The first time he feels the terror, he doesn't understand why. As he barely hangs onto consciousness, the soft silicon presses against his face, enveloping his nose and mouth. The spark of terror catches fire in his chest and quickly spreads across his body. It ignites a screaming inferno within his skull. He forces his eyes open. Everything is red. There's shapes above him. Pure oxygen fills his airways, stale and clinical and familiar and wrong.
Grace's memories of his unwilling medical sedation and forced sacrifice return, vivid and violent. Later, on the journey back to save Rocky, he has night terrors. The thin lines between consciousness, unconsciousness, memory, and nightmare blur. -

He hadn’t exactly been the most clean-nosed child, and after his enlistment, he got fairly acquainted with what pain can do to the body, what trauma can do to the mind; what spilt blood can do to the soul. There were still nights he laid awake, listening to the muffled bombs in the distance, to the whimpers and moans of his brothers as they fought through dreams. He knew how blood smelled, how it tasted, how it felt on the skin, how there were too many types of pain to accurately describe and how to inflict each one. He’d long since desensitized himself to it— there was no room for squeamishness when you were fighting to survive, and less when you were the only one who managed it. He’d had blood on his hands for a long, long time.

'Dim light pours in from the widening gap as the hatch lifts. Grace doesn't remember the emergency lights being this bright. Being in complete darkness will do that to you, he guesses. He also doesn't remember that old stuffy rust scent, maybe his nose started bleeding from the ammonia again. But what he definitely doesn’t remember is another man on the ship.

Ch. 1: Grace is in the crawlspace of the Hail Mary when he suddenly finds himself inside the Iron Lung with Simon at the beginning of Simon’s mission. Grace initially thinks he is dreaming but panics once he realizes that he isn’t. Simon helps him calm down but isn’t exactly thrilled to have company on his mission. When the Iron Lung is attacked, Simon gets knocked unconscious. Unable to communicate with Ava on the surface but with the knowledge that the submarine is being pulled up, Grace finds what passes for a first-aid kit and treats Simon’s injuries to the best of his abilities before suddenly reappearing back on the Hail Mary. He pulls himself out of the crawlspace and collapses after assuring Rocky that he’s alright.
