She adjusted the stitch. This time it seated perfectly.
"There," he said. The low single word of approval sent a disproportionate pulse of satisfaction through her.

Xie Zheng was reading documents when Fan Chang Ning burst into the room like a small, violent storm.
“Jiefu! I figured out romance,” she announced.
He blinked and immediately rolled up whatever he was reading like a guilty official hiding corruption evidence. “You figured what out?”
“You’re doing it wrong,” she said, climbing into the chair across from him and kneeling on it like a general planning a war. “You can’t just stand there and look at my sister like a sad ghost.”
“I am not a sad ghost.”
She ignored that. “Do you like my sister?” she asked bluntly.
Xie Zheng felt like someone had just shoved an entire pig leg down his throat.
“I… I…” he scrambled for an answer, suddenly finding the table extremely interesting.
His silence was answered by Chang Ning’s slow, smug grin—the kind only small children and very dangerous politicians possess.
“I have a plan,” she announced.
*In which Chang Ning was the genius behind the signature Tangerine peel kiss (and other crazy romance manoeuvres thereafter).

He turned his head toward the door, the motion unhurried and relaxed, now that he felt more or less safe in this house.
(More or less – as he was still distrustful, still cautious, still watching. The Zhaos and the Fan sisters seemed like honest people, but Xie Zheng knew very well that people could be bought anywhere; you only needed to find the right price. He was acutely aware that his life was hanging in the hands of people who could definitely use a few taels of silver.)
After a brief pause, the door creaked open just enough for a small head to poke through.
“Can I come in?” his visitor whispered much louder than probably intended, blinking at him with innocent, big brown eyes and chubby cheeks.
Xie Zheng – already expecting her – nodded silently, curious to find out what she was up to today.
Changning entered as if she was trying to be stealthy – mindful of the noise of her shoes against the floor, and pushing the door to a close slowly and quietly.
(Xie Zheng didn’t deem it necessary to point out that her earlier whisper-shouting in front of the door probably betrayed her to Zhao daniang already.)

Changning looked triumphant at his response, pleased to be proven right. She stepped closer, her gaze already drifting upward, settling on his still-loose hair with unmistakable focus.
“You didn’t do your hair either,” she pointed it out.
Xie Zheng briefly hesitated before he admitted, “I was hoping someone would come eventually to handle that.”
Usually Changyu would help him, as raising his arm that high on the injured side was still pulling on his wounds quite painfully. Since they couldn’t see each other until the ceremony started, he assumed that maybe Zhao daniang would do it between a task or two, but –
“They’re all busy,” Changning said, confirming Xie Zheng’s thoughts. “A’jie is busy. Zhao daniang is busy. Everyone is busy.”
“I noticed,” Xie Zheng said, fondly amused at hearing the makings of a pout in her voice. Maybe he wasn’t the only one who was bored here.
Changning tilted her little head to the side, assessing his dark hair with too much seriousness for a five-year-old.
“I can do it,” she nodded.
Xie Zheng looked at her very, very sceptically.
