Summary
The invitation to the ball, however glittery, had clearly been out of politeness or obligation rather than any particular interest in Rolan as a wizard. Of course it had. Rolan should have guessed so from the start.
Well, bollocks to this, and bollocks to the lot of them. Rolan doesn’t need to rub elbows and eat bad canapés to know he’s better at magic than half the people here. Fireballing the party might be concerned impolite, so if he takes the Blackstaff portal back to Baldur’s Gate now, he can be home in time for Lia to save him some dinner.
He chugs the last of the flat wine, places his half-eaten pastry thing on Mordenkainen’s toe, and turns to leave. Which, of course, means he immediately walks into Gale Dekarios.

Abracadabra, abracadabra“Fuck, yes,” he breathes. He won’t say he’s obsessed, but he’s maybe been looping this track a little more than is healthy, and it gives him a jolt of energy. He throws himself into it, one last surge of energy to power him through before he throws in the towel. He’s dancing for himself now, arms thrust into the air, but he’s not upset when he feels a body press up behind him, strong hands grabbing his hips and pulling him back so the man behind him can grind against his ass.

It was the first response Rolan had received back. The only response. He’d known before he’d started writing letters that the odds of hearing back were vanishingly small. If he couldn’t convince a wizard in his own city to take him on as an apprentice, why would any other far flung and far more notable ones deign to do so? He knew that most who received his missives would likely think the same thing as the wizards in Elturel. He was too old. Too untrained, never mind that that was the very issue he was seeking to correct.
Too uneducated.
Out of all the replies he could have hoped to receive, this was by far the most unlikely.
And yet, he held the letter in his hands.
