Summary
Sirius Black has a habit of saying ridiculous things in French — to giggling Hufflepuffs, to anyone who'll listen, to absolutely no one who asked. Marlene has a habit of rolling her eyes and pretending she doesn't notice that the things he says to her sound different.
Softer. Quieter. Not for show.
Over Easter break, her French grandparents translate every stupid, beautiful thing he's ever murmured in her direction. Turns out cheese was never his destiny. But she might be.
Or: Sirius confesses in a language she doesn't speak, and Marlene learns French out of spite. It escalates.

Summary
Lily, feeling ridiculous that she feels more nervous now than when faced with five armed Death Eaters, says, "Look, I don’t — not — feel the same way."
He turns to her. Processes that. Then, "You like me?"
Lily purses her lips. "Yes."
"As in — ?"
"Yes."
"As in you want to kiss me, and — ?"
"Yes, James."
"Oh."

Summary
In the end, they died — but before being martyrs, they had been warriors; and before being warriors, they had been students. Then again, in 1976, it was hard to tell one from the other. But, before being anything else, they were simply James and Lily: two awfully temperamental and stubborn teenagers that, somehow, ended up fighting in the same side of a terrible war.
In the end, they died, but this is a story about their lives.

Summary
It's 1975 and Lily Evans lives a double life.
At home, she's the Irish Catholic daughter of a union organizer in a dying industrial town. At Hogwarts, she never puts a toe out of line, never gives her pure-blood classmates a reason to doubt her. Lily has big plans, even if she's not sure what, precisely, those plans entail.
James Potter has never had to be anyone but himself.
Why would he? Wealthy, good-looking, and intelligent, he knows he's lucky, but the war is bringing what's important into sharp relief. His ageing parents have joined the Order of the Phoenix, and James longs to fight alongside them.
When Voldemort's followers murder seven Muggle-borns in broad daylight just before the start of their fifth year, tensions at Hogwarts reach an all-time high. The so-called Dark Lord is recruiting from the student body, and the time has come to act. The trouble is, Hogwarts isn't split between good people and Death Eaters, and old prejudices die hard.
Lily and James have always been enemies - ask anybody. But now that they've found themselves on the same side of an escalating war waged in classrooms and corridors, will they see each other in a different light?
