While musing over how many lashes he should assign himself, his robe gets caught in the undergrowth. He tries to get it free, turns and comes face to face with a bright red bloom, petals glistering like fresh blood in the sun. He startles, taking a breath.
Lan Wangji takes another inhale before he takes a step away, still caught in some thorny plant. With one final pull, he is free, but it brings him back against the blooms. He gets another sniff and this time he sneezes. In a very loud and undignified manner. He glares at the plant before he fully turns away to continue walking.
“Lan Zhan?,” he suddenly hears the shout behind him and freezes.---

What unmitigated gall for him to say this, when it’s Wei Ying’s image that hovers behind Lan Wangji’s closed eyelids, when it’s Wei Ying’s words that seem to sit under his skin for hours afterward. Lan Wangji feels overwhelmed to the point of crying. He’s never felt so full of tragedy and frustration and helplessness. And now he has to tolerate Wei Ying on top of it all.
And Wei Ying doesn’t look so well all of a sudden.
