“Wondering how I might bleed?” Pantalone asked with a faint smile as Dottore's thumb traced the steady rhythm of his pulse.
“No,” Dottore replied.
His thumb pressed more firmly against the pulse beneath Pantalone's throat.
“Does it not seem fitting that I should be the one to choke the final breath from your lungs, rather than leave the task to those pathetic things you insist on inhaling?” His voice remained maddeningly calm. “After all, it was I who gave you the ability to breathe so easily in the first place.”
Pantalone's pulse faltered beneath Dottore's thumb, drawing a self-satisfied smile onto the doctor's lips.
“How transparent,” Dottore mused.

A silence falls over the room, broken only by the soft shuffle of little feet up to no good.

From the far back of the classroom, a soft whirring hum fills the air; a sentient little suitcase gives a quiet buzz before it gently lifts off its charging station. Two eyes on a small screen blink open—once, twice—taking in its surroundings with a hesitant gaze.
Chaos.
Mehrak is the official unofficial class assistant to the Sumeru crew kindergarten class, which has been abandoned by their M.I.A. teacher, Nahida.

The words offer no obvious implication, yet Kaveh finds one regardless. “Don’t say it like that.” He turns away, color rising to his cheeks.” I don’t mean it like—” He stops himself before the lie can take shape, before he can commit to it. “I mean to say that it’s a lovely tradition, or so I’ve heard. Others are doing it tonight, so I thought I would… make sure you don't feel left out.”

With a cheerful beep, Mehrak releases the claymore, letting it clatter harmlessly to the floor.
Neither of them speaks.
Alhaitham stands motionless at the edge of the bed, eyes still fixed on the fallen weapon. Above them, Mehrak hums contentedly, hovering like nothing had happened.
“Explain,” Alhaitham demands.
Kaveh has recently moved back in, but the relationship between him and Alhaitham is still strained. When he overworks himself and falls ill, it's up to Mehrak to defend his master against the evil Alhaitham.

Kaveh freezes. His breath catches, sharp and shallow. The desk suddenly feels too real beneath his hands. Blood. Not a smear, not a scratch—a stain. Large. Dried. Old enough to no longer glisten, fresh enough to unsettle.
His mind races. Alhaitham—was he hurt? Badly? Is that why the office is deserted? Why Panah’s been dodging every question like arrows? Why the House of Daena, heart of Sumeru’s intellect, now beats in silence?
His voice comes low.
“What happened here?”
In which someone makes an attempt on the Acting Grand Sage's life, and Kaveh finds out about it after the fact.

“Would you leave if I said ‘no’?” Al-Haitham asks.
And just like that, the student is sliding into the seat, flipping up the desk and pulling his tablet out. He shoots Al-Haitham a glare just as the professor starts lecturing.
