Summary
Shane doesn't realise he's pregnant until he's already lost the baby unknowingly conceived during the night he and Rozanov spent together before the Olympics - the night that he chose to trust Rozanov with the most vulnerable, secret parts of himself, a trust that was shattered by Rozanov's cold, callous treatment of him in the months that followed.
Ilya doesn't realise he's fallen in love until he's faced with losing Shane to the six months of his unanswered texts, the incidental cruelty of Ilya’s desperate, last-ditch attempt to protect and distance himself unknowingly compounded for Shane by the secret grief at his loss of a baby nobody but he even knows existed.
By the time Ilya realises that there's something very wrong with Shane, he's terrified that it's too late - not just to save any possibility of a relationship between them, but to save Shane's life.

“Yeah, I mean, I did two years. You didn’t go to college, did you?”
“No, so I have to do my own readings, my own studies. You must have done philosophy courses?”
Was Rozanov mining for chirping material? What the fuck? “I, no I took like…a writing seminar. And um, a civics course. Plus, like, math.”
Rozanov blinked at him, again. “Math.”
“Yeah, math.”
“Oh. So you are a mathematician? You study calculus? Linear algebra? Discrete mathematics?”
What in the fuck is discrete mathematics? “I dunno, no. It was like, y equals mxb squared, or whatever. You know, algebra.”
“Algebra.” Rozanov’s eyebrows shot up his face. “Like for a child? American university gives you primary school lessons?”
