It all happened so fast, his baby boy’s life. He was still playing with toy soldiers and hiding cookies in the piano seat. He was a tiny thing and he was supposed to still have time to get big.
They always say that, don’t they? They grow up too fast. No one ever tells you that sometimes they don’t grow up at all. No one ever tells you that caskets come in kid’s sizes, that you can have them custom-painted with your dead baby’s favorite color.
He hopes Frankie would have known that Frank would have stopped him out of love. That no parent wants their kid to see the bad things, to struggle through fights, to ever have to think that they may not make it home. He hopes Frank would have made that much clear.
He hopes Frankie knew how badly Frank loved him, for all of his mistakes. He hoped that he never goddamn doubted that.
There’s a laundry list of things that Frank wishes he could tell his boy, if he ever had a chance. He thinks he’s going to spend the rest of his life doing that, finding new things to never get to tell him.
If he could tell Frankie anything, he wishes he could tell him how badly he wishes he wasn’t in the grass when the shooting started. He wishes he was up, playing with them, close enough to his boy to grab him. He’d have shielded him with his own body when the popping started and gone down in a spray of red, crumpled like a broken fucking marionette. He’d have done it with a smile on his face if it meant his boy got to stand up and walk away after.
There is not a world that exists where Frank would not have taken those bullets for his baby. He hopes Frankie knew that. He hopes Frank told him enough times in enough ways that he never doubted that even once.
Sometimes, he’s not certain that he did. And that… That keeps him up at night. That keeps him from sleeping.
“I love you, Frankie,” says Frank, to the field where his boy isn’t. “So goddamn much.”
The light over the field flickers off.
By the time it flickers on again, the stands are empty.

Summary

When the MLH can’t negotiate with the Hockey Players’ Union in time to prevent a hockey lockout at the start of the 2015 season, the Zürich Lions jump at the chance to sign both Shane and Ilya to short-term contracts. For four months in Switzerland, they share a team, a line, a house, and a bed.

“My mother needs me. If she comes home to my father–” Rozanov didn’t finish but the threat hung in the air. They’d had an unspoken agreement to avoid those heavy topics during their time together but now the weight seemed to creep in with smothering pressure they were both buckling under.
He’d have to sell the apartment and never again have to remember random hotel room numbers or see that flash of teeth Rozanov always gave him even around his mouth guard when he won a face-off. Montreal would dominate Boston without him. But what was the fucking point to say he was the best when there was no one around for him to beat?
“Marry me.”
Shane hadn’t realized he’d spoken until Rozanov’s head shot up in confusion as if he’d misheard Shane’s English.
