CASE FIC — (I’ve only read the first part of the series, so this summary is for that!) Book 1 is an extended case fic. It starts a year or so after the reveal of Baby Watson. Except — John split things off with Mary because BabyWatson wasn’t actually his. And it’s been a year since. He’s healing, but not quite there yet. So Sherlock takes him to Edinburgh on a ‘Murder Holiday’ 😂 There John meets Sherlock’s cousin Violet and is introduced to the OCs that make up the mysterious murder of Sandra.
THOUGHTS — I usually avoid extended case fics like these. In my opinion, a lot of them get boring after a while. But this one kept itself very interesting! The mystery was not over done, which was great. In fact, I really liked how the author introduced the facts. We learned a bit of a time along with the characters (so it felt like we were involved too.) I also liked the characters here. Sherlock and John are well represented. Although I do think Sherlock was a bit OOC at times, there was a reason for it (changed circumstances that are revealed through the course of the story.) The OCs we’re rather interesting too. They all had their own unique personalities. Cleverly done! I felt like Violet was a bit too much of a Mary Sue, tbh. Patrick himself was also a bit of a Gary Stue, lol. But in both counts it added more spice to the story, so I didn’t mind it as much — it kept things moving. Which is really what’s important here. If they were just near-perfect for the heck of it, then they’d be pointless. But no, both of them brought a bit of depth to the story. So I appreciated them just as much as Sherlock and John by the end.
All in all? Great mystery read. The Sherlock and John relationship is well done here as well. The author pulls off their canonical chemistry quite seamlessly, and the build up to their eventual sexual and romantic relationship felt right for them. I will definitely read this again in the future! I might try to read the rest of the series next time too. But for now, I was quite content with the way the first book ended.
