She knows, in the back of her mind, that she has people she can contact, somewhere she can go, steps she can take that are actually forward instead of blindly stumbling laterally at best.
But, an even bigger part of her weighs down on the rest of her mind, bemoaning the effort, shrinking away from the vulnerability and the shame she’d feel crawling back after months of radio silence.
Valentina promised one last job and things will get better.
She just has to make it through one last job.

Summary
The disappearance and eventual murder of Antonia Dreykov was something the town took much more lightly than Bob Reynolds, a struggling mystery writer, expected. To him, Raiden was a peaceful place, given its low population. The worst things he's seen there were a couple bar fights that involved broken glass and ended in stitched fists. Another horrid death was enough to shake him down to his bones.
Despite his initial anxiety, Bob couldn't help but get himself involved in the investigation, despite Chief John Walker's constant warnings for him not to. He'd begun to have dreams—clues from Antonia herself, he believed. It was as if she called him, and only him, to help her get the justice he deserved, even if he didn't know her.
However, detectives were hardly trained. The new mayor pretended to be empathetic. A web of residents were involved. If this murder was ever going to be solved, Bob had to take it into his own hands.
