Surge is very strong, and we all know she's cool. But she kind of only wins difficult fights with tricks or powerups. A lot of the time, those only level the playing field against someone like Sonic, and Blaze is pretty explicitly on his level.
Keep in mind, for basically every fight in the last story she was chugging power off that shard of the End. Even with her self-healing I don't think she's as good blow for blow as Blaze, Knuckles, or Sonic, but she leverages that healing to get around the fact that she's not as skilled a fighter as they are. More of a brawler, really. Honestly, it sucks to see her on the backfoot, but considering how strong Blaze is, this was an excellent showing from Surge.
