Damn, I will never quite get over how much this fic resonated with Oumota fans. It still makes me happy though, how much people enjoyed this one, even if it's not one I tend to go back and re-read for my own enjoyment. Seeing you enthuse about your favorite bits gives me an excuse to reread it myself and get to that bit and go 'oh yeah, I can see where they're coming from there', reading it with your eyes now. And you're totally right, Kaito's argument with Kokichi in the second half? Should absolutely be read with the idea that it's Kaito making both arguments, not Kokichi or even Kaito's idea of Kokichi. He's very much talking to himself, Kokichi is just the framework he's using. And Kato absolutely has Doubts about his own belief system right now. How could he not, with everything he chooses to do in the trial? Nothing that happens in that trial can be argued as Kaito believing in his friends. Even when Shuichi *tries* to help Kaito gives up in the end. He's not about to be saved through the Power of Friendship, the best he can do is make sure he doesn't take them down with him. There is zero optimism brought into that trial, because Kaito doesn't have a lot to be optimistic about in that moment.
Other then, well, maybe Kokichi will be waiting for him somewhere after that... which dammit, I'm gonna say they're all in a simulation, its FINE they're all FINE that's canon to me, dammit! If Danganronpa 2 gets it, why not fifty-three!
